Did you ask for 'hydraulic oil'.. or for universal tractor fluid.

My local walmart does not stock 'hydraulic oil' either.. yet always has 4-5 5g pails of universal tractor fluid on the shelf.

I did ask for Hydraulic Oil in a 5 gallon pail...

The clerk had the department manager come over and he asked what I wanted it for and I explained it was for my Caterpillar Tractor Bull Dozer. He said they only carry automotive oil and fluids.

Hmm.. that's a hard call.... I really wonder if they know what applications their oils fit. I've had near the same conversation with my local walmart manager after they moved all the utf into the golfcart section.. and then they tried to tell me they didn't have it.

Still.. it is possible they just may not carry it. I know some stores actually have 90w gl-1 available too.. my local one does.. but I have been to others that don't.

Looks like it might be limited are distribution.. also looks like it was only a viscosity issue.

Also looks like the writer of the column knows nothing about machines... since they said no 'engines' were likely dameged by the gear oil.

How many of you guys run gear oil in your engines?

Wonder how many other states the out of spec. gear oil made it to. I don't use the supertech stuff . But, some may have it in their gears & don't know it

Yeah I'm betting it made it to many places other than California. Its just no one else tested and caught the problem. How many county weights and measures agencies test for this, not many I'd bet.

I don't think Universal Tractor Fluid and "Gear Oil" are the same thing.

According to a news release, an investigation by state and local Weights and Measures officials found that the 85W-140 and 75W-140 SuperTech gear oils did not meet advertised viscosity levels in violation of California law.

I know a man who runs supertech oils in his log truck, he swears by the supertech. He does all his own service work on his truck. He has owned several different trucks, all filled with supertech fluids and no problems. Log trucks get ran hard, heavy loaded about 85,000 each load, dust so thick you can't see in front of you, a log truck around here is considered severe duty. Supertech has held up for his needs. I have used supertech in some of my stuff with no problems. How many cars get there oil changed at Wal-Mart?? with supertech oil and filters, a bunch without people having problems from the supertech brand fluids.

I use supertech with no problems as well.

A simple out of range viscosity number may not even cause a problem. I can envision a tested oil hitting 70w150 and being 'disqwualified' for viscosity if it is sold as 85/140... yet it's add package and other lubricating properties might be fine.

In any case.. i don't use either of the 2 listed lubes..

I still find the link with the glaring error laughable... they need a technical content editor BADLY...

Not only do they need a technical editor they need just an editor- at the end they listed the contact numbers for the prosecutor and the weights and measures office without area codes

Did anyone read farther down the first link where Valvoline is claiming some Mobil 1 products don't meet spec either..

All makes me wonder in todays world of corporate greed just who all isn't selling what they claim it is. Oh well at least it hopefully doesn't have peanuts in it
