I was stumped and took it to dodge as I thought it was a computer problem.
I thought a replacement comp. would be pricey until they told me it was the fuel transfer pump and thats a $785 part. On top of that they assume that the injector pump has been damaged by being starved by the faulty transfer pump, and that the Inj. pump will need to be changed very soon anyway.
:mad:Ha now the Injector pump, they want $2700. Note: all these prices are just parts if I install. Dodge labour is 119.00/hr.

Oh and how could I forget... The new transfer pump is not an exact replacement. originaly found on the side of the block the new pump requires a conversion kit that relocates the pump inside the fuel tank.

Anyone else encounter this? The service guy said he was surprised because most of these were replaced under the 150k warenty

I am hoping I can dig up a working used original type transfer pump from another truck and install at a fraction of the cost and see what it solves before I go deep into a $4000.00 bill

You may want to check out

Dodge Diesel - Diesel Truck Resource Forums - Powered by vBulletin (for expertise) or Dodge Cummins and Ford Power Stroke Diesel Truck Accessories - Geno's Garage (for the parts)

This is a common problem it seems due to lack of lubrication in the transfer pump.. Even if it was replace before, Im sure others have replace it multiple times...

someone on there may be able to point you to another vendor for parts and/or another repair shop that could save you some money

There are some good Dodge Cummins websites for help with this not uncommon problem.
I don't stay current but I believe that there is a fuel pump system made by a company called Fass (sp?) that will cure the problem.

If you do not do your own work, I suggest seeking out a private shop to work on your engine. That is not to say that factory mechs are not capable but someone specializing in diesel work will generally be more knowledgable and often as not have a more reasonable hourly rate.

Via the websites, you may find someone in your area that will give you a hand or get you pointed in the right direction. I know I found plenty of info and help for my 12V.

Don't let them install the in-tank pump. You can still get original style pump. I moved mine to the frame rail. You can get better pumps like the Fass or Air Dog also. I had to get a rebuilt injection pump last year. It was less than $1400 installed. I did my own transfer pump for less than $200 including the kit to move it to the frame rail. You really need to get a fuel pressure guage to keep an eye on the lift (transfer) pump. These are a known problem with the 24valve Dodge. JC

Thank you very much guys . this is the stuff I want to hear.

You gotta love how the service counter fella made it sound like the whole truck and world would self destruct if dodge didnt install the only MOPAR parts
available to solve the crises.

It really sounded like there were no options. but you guys put me on to the FASS system, which seems good, but im still unsure if the inj.pump should be changed as well. Im not much of an engine guy. but I am of the belife that I can ussually do a job wrong once and then get the stuff to do it right the second time, still for less than letting anyone else do it. and then I know how to do it for sure the 3rd time... if theres a third time.

Yes a fuel pressure gauge would be a good idea. It seems like there is a warning light with the fass to alert of pressures below the required 7psi.

I did sign up for Diesel truck resource, but I almost feel like im cheating on TBN.

Im sure diesel truck resouces can give you the answers you need.. BUT incase they dont you can pay to join TDR (turbo diesel resources)..

Not that you can't find them cheaper, but the Geno's Garage link I gave you will probably give you everything you need to get the job done.

good luck.. I have a 2002 CTD (with only 60k miles) but I wouldnt be surprised if i dont have this problem down the road.. :-(

Not on a Dodge but my uncle has a 6.5 Diesel in a 2500 Suburban, 90's model. He has had to replace the injector pump twice in 5 years at about $3000 a pop. The truck only has 125,000 miles and is in really good shape. All he uses it for is a tow rig about 15 times a year pulling a 10,000# boat.

Now I can't help with the original problem but perhaps I'm lucky I can't afford a newer truck and have to make do with the old 12 valve with the mechanical injector pump.:D

At least I got 4wheel disc brakes and two extra doors for my trouble. JC

My parts place seems to have quite a bit better prices, well, after the core charge anyways. Plus, they've always got some 5% off your cart coupon codes floating around the internet.
NOTE: I am not affiliated with them in any way, just think they've got really good deals.
