If you plan on doing it yourself I wouldn't pressure wash the engine,QUOTE]

I dont have a pressure washer, but really do like the little $12 degreaseing gun from PA. it has pretty good pressure and flow control and I doubt it could harm anything. I sure will clean everything first tho.

:eek:And yeah wow on the rail pressure. Guess you need more then a rag to protect you when cracking those HP lines. lol:rolleyes: Ill bet they say dont do it right?

Seems they all die at least once.

Best tip if you havent already GET A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE (30 psi range)
and stop the world if it ever reads below 5psi

Anyone looking to do an injector pump install should really watch all 5 of the
DieselDan Productions videos on youtube. Just search VP44 and it should pop up.

Anyone know if I can rename this thread? I was frustrated when I started it and its not a very helpfull title for future searchers of this topic.
Just request with Admin?

The high rail pressures are only on the Bosch common rail trucks, the VP44 trucks run in the single digit thousands . When I attended a GM Technical training seminar for the Duramax Diesel a few years back, [It runs a very similar fuel inj. system also made by Bosche], The instructor told us that GM had had some tech's die of blood poisoning on there way to the hospitle from trying to short a fuel line.

The rail pressure is monitored by the IPS, injection pressure sensor, and when this sensor senses a sudden drop in rail pressure, it will try and ramp the duty cycle of the IPR, inj. pressure regulator up, we were told by the instructor that the system has the ability to increase the fuel pressure by several thousand psi whithin a few tenthes of a second once a high pressure line or fitting is opened on a running engine, DON"T DO IT.

The only safe way to Diagnose a Bosche common rail system is with the proper scanner. Not only can you electronicly short injectors for test purposes, but you can also measure the fuel on the return side, which when out of spec can point to a potential injector failure. Again, the above info is in regards to the later model common rail Cummins, not the VP44 trucks, although caution should be used when working on any high pressure systems, whether it be fuel, hyraulic etc., blood poisoning can kill you.

Sorry for the HIjack, Ryan.

I lost my vp44 to bad electronics at 95k. It does happen. My lift pump was still holding 9psi at wide open throttle. I screwed up the studs on the lift pump removing it to move to the frame rail. The replacement that I have carried for two years pegs my guage (16 psi) now. JC
