Things we see on our land

/ Things we see on our land #111
Iv been looking for a fox on our property, this morning this is what i see comming out from under one of our sheds

That looks like a couple of really healthy fox kits. If you feed them fruit and bread scraps, they may hang around for a long time. They're sure to be very skittish though.

My neighbor's house is built right into the woods. You can't even see their house for the trees until you get within 25' of it. They have a slope with lots of rocks right out their back door where they have a small 10' x 20' deck. They put all kinds of food scraps on the rocks and it draws in all kinds of wildlife. Recently, they saw the foxes in the pictures below. My neighbor apologized for the quality of the pictures because she said she was too excited to think. She cut off the legs on one picture and the other is slightly out of focus. What is strange to me is how the fox and deer don't intimidate each other one bit. If you like these pictures, I'll tell Sandy that she has some fans of her photos.

Okay, I'll change the subject.;)

My wife and I were sitting in our living room this morning when she said there was a bird outside in a tree that she had never seen before. I got my binoculars out and identified the bird in my Nat'l Audubon Guide as a Rose Breasted Grosbeak. They are not supposed to range as far south as Texas, but they do show up in central Oklahoma. This is the first time either of us have ever seen this bird, but I'm sure many of our Canadian TBNers and those in northern states have seen them.

The picture is a little blurry, but there is no mistaking what this bird is. He was ruling the bird feeder and running off the cardinals who dared to challenge him.:)

Steph spotted a few Red Breasted Grosbeak's last year for the first time. It was kind of cold out, and we thought that maybe they were further south then normal because of the weather up north. Then we saw them again this year, and were wondering if the same thing was happening. Like Jim said, they are not normally this far South.

Eddie, my Audubon Guide said they winter over in the tropics, so maybe they are migrating north and just stopping over here for a meal or two on the way. I like your pictures with the other birds. Kathy shot some with a house finch and a painted bunting that were hanging out in our yard too. Most of those shots were at a long distance because the painted buntings seem to be extremely shy.

We used to get tons of these grosbeaks and also Evening grosbeaks every year. They say they are in decline (like most migratory songbirds) and we have not seen any for 2 years now. Kind of a bummer.

I get free birdseed from my work and we have a lot of feeders. It's nice to have lots and lots of birds around. I'll take some pics and post them.

Hi All,
We have been living here now for around eight years and this morning is the first time we have a rather large visitor checking out our empty veggie patch and orchard.
She scared the missus some when it was looking in the family room widow, kid's got a real kick out of it though.

Wish I could get that free birdseed. Even using about the cheapest thing Walmart has, I've decided I really shouldn't be spending that $50+ a month on birdseed.

John:

I have a hard time imagining kangaroos wandering around in my back yard.

Is there a hunting season on those guys? What do they taste like?

If someone shoots a trophy size one, what part does he mount? It is not quite like a deer or an elk where you have a head with antlers.

Is there as much meat on that tail as it looks like?

I was wondering if anyone would comment on those mold boards, I have never seen anything like them before either. I am curious as to how well they work. They look original...I don't think they were modified to look like that.

I will have to ask about extra sweeps for the cultivator, thanks for the tip.

Good Afternoon Ridgewalker,
Not to highjack Eddies thread, but scrolling through the pics that you posted of the plow and other equipment, I realised that what you own is a Dearborn moldboard plow.

I refurbed something very similiar a couple of years back. Mine is the Dearborn model # 10-8. Here is a pic of mine after redoing it, hope this helps you out ! I can also provide a link to the thread while I was refurbing it, that may provide some valuable info !
