John Deere Over-Rated?

Where I live (Quebec), the question would rather be "Is Kubota overrated?" cos its almost all you see in the CUT size (under 60HP). They own that market with Deere and NH fighting it out for the crumbs, the other brands are a rare sight.

In the the utility/ag size, Deere is indeed the dominant player here but there are quite a few Case/NH, also some MF. Kubota is not really a player in that segment, they top out at 100HP or so.

Those used JD ag tractors sure sell at premium though, the Fords from the'80s and early '90s are pricey too.

Interesting topic. Just for comparison I went and looked at other website reviews apart from TBN and out of approximately 10 different reviews the average review was about a 3 or a 4 out of 10. Biggest complaint was the transmission and the seat. One reviewer stated that for light work it was fine but when he put it to a heavier job he was having problems with the FEL bending. So if that's the case it may have the lift capacity but if the equipment is going to break trying to lift it then there's a problem. Deere may have a reduced lift capacity but you're not going to bend or break anything doing it. To me that's just being safe.

I just took a quick glance at the JD 2320 specs... It is a bit down on lift capacity at full height, but up on boom breakout force, bucket rollback force, loader lower, and bucket dump specs. :D I'm sure NH and Kubota have some favorable numbers on their tractors too.

People buy tractors for different reasons. The criteria they set as important to them might not be important to someone else. That is why people buy different makes, brands, attachments, etc., etc.

I agree,
I needed a "small" machine, with big specs in the loader and weight.
I looked at a Kubota B2320 but its loader was only rated at 771# at the pins, the CK20 was 1070 at the pins, The 2320 was only 1400#, the CK was around 2000#. The CK20 can be had for 10K through bobcat, the B2320 was 16K.

not to be a jerk, but what you bought won't lift 1000lbs. You fell pray to a creative marketing technique where the measurements are taken behind the bucket. The real world capacity is about 750lbs in the bucket.

I don't think you are a jerk, but I don't think that you understand that I can read specs, I compared ALL the loaders when I was looking at tractors by the lift capacity at the PINS, that is what was important to me.

I laugh reading some of this thread. I owned a Kubota and loved it. It was solid and never had a lick of problems. I just bought a 2305 JD and LOVE it as well. For me, I can't compare the 2nd tier tractors to Kubota or JD. Price wise, New Holland was as high as JD or Kubota. JD service wise around here is king, so I leaned more towards JD. Comparing JD quailty to Kioti seems foolish though. I just don't like the looks of Kioti either. No offense to everyone here that has them. They just look like a cheap gray tractor to me.

Hmm, truthfully, I felt the same way about the JD's after leaving the JD dealer, they just seemed "cheap" and flimsey, way to much plastic for my liking.
Or maybe it was the made in China proofs on some of the castings ?

Are not the JD CUT's just rebadged Yanmars ?? (JD790)

I spent over 2 years figuring out what tractor I wanted, after 15 years of owning/operating larger equipment, Kioti/Bobcat quality is 2nd to none in the CUT market.

JD CUTs with 35 or less pto hp have Yanmar engines with the exception of the JD4120 that has a 35 pto hp JD engine. JD's larger tractors have JD engines with the exception of a few orchard tractors in the 66-83 pto hp range that have Detroit Diesel engines and the JD 20A nursery/greenhouse tractor that has a 17 pto hp Lombardini engine. Don't know if you can call those JDs with Yanmar engines "rebadged Yanmars" unless Yanmar makes the rest of the tractor.

For me, I can't compare the 2nd tier tractors to Kubota or JD.

How can all others be second tier tractors when Yanmar manufactures many JD products and tractors for other manufactures? Would not all Yanmar products have to be tier one like JD? By the way, I have a Mahindra probably a third tier tractor but it works for me.

Kioti/Bobcat quality is 2nd to none in the CUT market.

The Owning and Operating sections on TBN say otherwise. Way more problems there than the Deere or Kubota.

As a JD owner, I can attest to their machines' quality. Some of their less expensive compacts are made by Yanmar, and many have Yanmar powerplants, but most JD's are made in the USA. Most of the compacts are made at their Augusta plant, and I have been there, so this is reliable information. One misconception is that JD products are universally more-expensive than other brands. While in some cases that is true it is not uniformly so. I recently purchased a small compact tractor. It makes the sixth I have bought over the years. I priced Kubota and New Holland and MF with JD. For an equivalent machine the JD was not more expensive and the available dealer support was much better. This is something I have noted when pricing JD v. the competition in other purchases as well. If anything, my concern is that JD is not expensive ENOUGH. One can go to Lowe's or HD and buy a cheap L100 lawnmower; they are now offering countless price point compacts (they used to offer only two) to compete with some brand that I have never heard of or seen. These machines, many of them US made or assembled cannot compete with the features of other machines, many of which are foreign-made feature for feature. I have said in the past this will ultimately bite JD. JD has had a reputation for quality and progressive features on its machines for many years, and I wish they would not try to bring out machines which subvert that in an attempt to gain another 1-2% market share. In short, I do not feel JD machines are overpriced, but I DO feel other brands offer viable alternatives in certain product lines which should be examined prior to any purchase. Although many of us have had a chance to own or operate many different brands for comparison, the truth is that some who answer "yes" to the posed question have never priced nor operated the machine in question.
