John Deere Over-Rated?

Why is that ?

With the govt, UAW & FIAT running Chrysler, I don't think it will be around by the time I purchase another vehicle.

I think the original question was "is JD overrated"; this does not mean that they are better or worse than another brand but "are they as good of a value". JD is good and you pay for it.

I believe JD is overrated when compared to a similarly equipped "other brands" that you can buy for 20 - 30% less. My tractor has a Mitsubishi engine and Eaton transmission; I have as much confidence in these brands as I do in JD; this is not a junk machine and it is appropriate to compare it to an equivalent JD. I think JD could be more competitive in pricing - and we all know they could afford to be.

For comparison we should eliminate a few variables by assuming:
- good dealer support for either brand because any brand can have good or bad dealers
- narrow the discussion to compact tractors (no point in comparing Ford trucks to GM cars, or construction equip to sub-compacts)
- that they are similarly equipped (i.e. all are hydro or all are gear)

Now that we have the ground rules we can debate the important issues:
-Stability of the manufacturer / distributor should be considered and a value placed on the risk of loosing future parts and service.
-The quality of the product and reliability
-The differences in options or value added items

Tractors are like women; you will never find exactly what you want all in one package. The ideal tractor would probably have
- Kubota engine
- Kubota loader
- Case hood and grill
- Eaton HST transmission
- NH 3ph
- JD loader joystick and placement
- JD paint

Now if we could only build the ideal woman.

I gotta tell you, if you put IDENTICAL tractors in front of me except for the paint.... I'm going with the the JD paint scheme.


So, everything else being equal (an impossibility for sure), I'm defaulting to JD.


Let's face it. They ARE the prettiest.

Huh? People come to this tractor forum for info. The info says Kubota and Deere have way fewer problems than Kioti and Mahindra. What does has anything to do with buying a "Tractor Forum". Bobcat has been in the CUT market for a year selling contract machines and now they are 2nd to none? Waiter, may I have a grain of salt please? Many are happy with their 2nd tier machines and there is nothing wrong with that, in fact, that is great, but to say thay are as reliable as a Deere or Kubota in general, it is my opinion that they are not and I base this on all the problems posted in these forums.

I know of many people that have had problems with their "2nd Tier" JOHN DEERE tractors. Many people who realize they paid WAY too much for there JD, justify it by calling all others "2nd Tier". Funny how the JD 790 is 1st tier, but update it, paint it black/yellow and now it is 2nd or 3rd tier, just because it is no longer green, just goes to prove the JD crowd is pay all those thousands for "green paint"

One fact you canot escape: You know what line the Kioti or Kubota machine came off of. When you buy Deere, is it Yanmar?, Korea?, Japan?, China?? who knows where it came from ?

But in the end MNU98 was right, All this sillyness is just Our opinions

I came into this after 20 years of turning wrenches on case 580's and the like,
I checked out ALL the brands for 2 years, The Deeres are good machines, so are the Kubotas and Kioti's, as a Mechanic I saw no differance.
For what I needed in a machine the Deere and Kubota was 16-19K
The Kioti/Bobcat is 10-13K.
I put emotions aside and used facts to make my purchase.

Did you get a chance to check out any Mahindras? Nothing wrong with those tractors either.

There are a lot of good choices out there. I doubt anyone should paint anything with a broad brush. Some of the things that irk me is, "Many people who realize they paid WAY too much for there JD," and "When you buy Deere, is it Yanmar?, Korea?, Japan?, China?? who knows where it came from?"

I didn't pay any more for my Deere than I would for a comparable tractor. Kind of wish I had been able to look at a Massey Ferguson 5425 - those are nice tractors too!

Its a global economy. Manufacturers source parts from all over the world. People keep throwing out Yanmar like it is something of which to be ashamed. It is a Japanese manufacturer... oh wait, isn't Kubota also from Japan? See, it doesn't really make a damned bit of difference. A good tractor is a good tractor.

If a person feels they are getting good value for their money, who are you to insinuate otherwise? For that matter, why do you care how others spend their money? If they ask you, that is one thing...

I've owned a Harry Ferguson, a bunch of Kubotas, and a John Deere. I've operated Longs, Whites, NH, MF, and Bobcat. All have had their positive points and all have had their negatives.

There are so many tractors out there at all kinds of different price points. I'm sure most of them manage to put a smile on their owner's face.

I was just pointing out that there are considerably more "problem" posts in the Owning/Operating sections for Kioti and Mahindra than there are in the Deere and Kubota forums - about 30 - 35% more. To me, that is significant, to others it is not. I do not own a Deere, just pointing out the trends on this forum.

Before you read this I do own tractors of various colors. There are not many tractors I don't like but I will say this about Deere.
The company I work for has been a Deere supplier for 40+ years and I can honestly say they are our best customer. They treat our company and people great. They are not perfect, they are not always the most innovative and not the cheapest. They are however number one in Ag tractor sales in the world. If you have ever had the pleasure of owning or driving a JD 4020 of the 1960's or the 4430's when they came out in 1973 with the Sound Guard Cab it is easy to understand why IH, Allis-Chalmers and others merged and lost market share in the early 80's. These were some awsome tractors that are still working ground today.
They may cost more upfront, but they have have the best resale value of any ag tractor made. Many models built by Deere appreciate over time.
They also have awsome parts support. We have filled replacement parts orders for the Waterloo Boy built in the late teens and twenties.

I may be accused of having some green blood flowing in my veins and I am a bit partial to Deere since growing up it was Deere tractors that helped put food on our the table. Now Deere still puts food on our table as a customer of the company I work for and I am very grateful for that.

Go to the five most recent pages in the Owning and Operating sections of John Deere, Kubota, Kioti and Mahindra.

Tally up all of the problems people have had with their machines in those 5 pages. The total posts will be the same for each brand, so should be fair.

You will see that Kioti and Mahindra will have far more problems than Kubota or Deere. .........

Still think the second tier machines are as good as Kubota and Deere? I want to think so too, but TBN says otherwise.

Interesting point but invalid conclusion. There is a selection bias in who posts. One might expect that JD and Kubota owners just take their machines to the local dealer as there are so many more convenient JD and Kubota dealers. Kioti does not have nearly the dealer network so people who buy them are perhaps more willing (or forced) to do more work themselves. I don't think it unreasonble to thing that those who do work themselves are more likely to post for help on TBN than those who just call the dealer and ask them to pick up the machine.
