What I am wondering is if this belt just goes from the crank pulley to the fan/water pump how do you tension it?

I have come to understand that sometimes there just is a better and easier way to do something. The linked belt will far outlast the rubber belt anyway, but if it should break for some unknown reason, you just pull a spare link out of your pocket and away you go again (no, I do not have stock in Fenner or Jason :D).

I question your blind praise for that belt design as being able to outlast a continous belt design.

I restore antiques... when i bought my allis chalmers G.. it had a STUDEBAKER belt on it.. ratty and tastty.. but it didn't slip.. and all the pullies turned.

Same story on most of my tractors.. when i take the belt in to xref the numbers, they have to somethimes go back past 2 decades to find suitable superceeded numbers.

do thos elink belts have that kind of history.. IE.. in service for , in some cases, 50 years or so?

Good question. However, just 20 months out of a new stock belt isn't really a good average either. I will keep an eye on the link belt and let you know. As far as the large vee belt is concerned, there is a "jockey pully" with tensioning adjustments to allow the necessary adjustment of the belt.

I don't consider your chinese 20 month belt any kind of a standard benchmark for lifespan of v belts... that was probably the cheapest made belt they could ship the thing with.. just like the stuff that passes for lube they come over with...

My belt has 580 hours since 2003 when I bought it new and its still fine. I think its like Soundguy said, sometimes they just want to get rid of old parts.

Hi,

Now you can see why I chose not to use the spare belt that came with the tractor. Even a new, same size US made vee belt, would cost me more than half of the cost of the link belt (3ft at $13.75 per foot - you do the maths). The link belt is easy to install - time is money. No having to mess with moving radiator, shroud, fan etc:eek::eek::eek:. I also got about seven spare new links for when one breaks. You can't repair the regular rubber vee belts effectively, that I am aware of.

So yes, a little more expensive up front but plenty of payback down the road and much, much easier to install:D:D:D.

Thx

that replacement belt was going to cost over half of your ((3@13.75) +8.02)=49.27.. so at least 25+ $$.. where you buying these things at?

I can get belts for my tractors less than 20$ even from the dealer?? ( less from napa or carquest )

Canada eh:p
I originally bought this link type of belt for a table saw. I since have replaced any broken belt that it will fit with it. It runs quieter and I have yet to break one (the table saw one is ten years old). I recently bought one for my 135 Massey as I have no desire to remove the front pump for the loader to replace it when it goes.
