Small leak on 422 front wheel motor

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

When I trenched with my $10.00 soil slicer, I pushed with it instead of pulling it. The reason I pushed was I was in really hard soil. I was able to make one pass very shallow, say and inch or less. By pushing I could then go over the shallow trench exactly as I could see it perfectly. The second pass was made an inch or so deeper, the third a bit deeper, etc... It worked great and went pretty darn fast.

Now you tell me! We were trenching backward and it was slow with a 3 inch depth. It was hard to keep the trench straight. You idea sounds better. I will try that next time. Thanks.

I had a wheel motor leak today. Not a lot of fluid loss. I have about 750 hours on the PT422. This was my first leakage. The wheels were on normally. I had really pushed the PT today by digging a dog electric fence trench, using a bushhog blade pushed into the ground and pulled backwards. I was using maximum torque on the wheel motors for about 2 hours. The tench was about 1500 feet long.
I pulled the hub off using an impact wrench on the hub nut and then a puller from Harbor Freight to remove the hub. The hardest part was getting the cotter pin out, so not to bad overall. I was amazed how easy the hub nut was to remove. Keith did not have a tightening spec on it. I also had to remove the bottom pin on the lift arm hydraulic piston to get clearance to remove the motor. I will be taking it to a local hydraulic shop tomorrow for repair/rebuild.
I have the radio electric fence to keep my Collie in, it works good and I didn't have to dig and burry any wires. I had another collie for about 12 or 14 years but he still acted like a pup but he disappeared, I never could find him don't know if someone took him or what but he always stayed close at home inside a chain linked fence. It didn't take my new collie long to learn his boundries and if any one tries to take him out of his boundry and they don't take the collar off first he will let us know. Last week someone had a billy goat that got loose and he was standing outside my chain link fence and my collie was on the inside of the fence they were looking eyeball to eyeball and the collie was barking for dear life. If that goat had got in I don't know which one would have won, but anything that gets in his boundry he tries to herd it.

Bob,

I see that you have a stump grinder. It will cut a very nice trench as deep as 1/2 diameter of the cutting wheel Those are carbide teeth on there, and should last a long time.

I suggested the stump grinder. The friend wanted minimum disturbance. He has a very nice lawn and the blade did minimum damage. The stump grinder sure would have been faster though.

I looked at the blade after we were done. It has a little curl to lift grass up. If I had flattened that out if would have been a little easier. I am tempted to use an old mower finishing blade. The cut would have been a lot narrower. I may make this up just to see how well it works.

I made mine with a plow share. If you have a TSC nearby, check them out. They have all different sizes and shapes and are pretty cheap.

TSC only a few miles away. I will take a look.
I took the motor to a local guy today. He was a little miffed that the tag was not there. He will call his supplier and see what he can find out. I was actually considering getting a spare seal and bearing for when this happens again. I may call that in tomorrow. Anybody know the cost?

Don't know the cost, Bob. But, unless I'm mistaken your wheel motors are White RS Series, 12.5ci...

That should get the guy started down the right path. I don't think the RS has that many configuration options, so he should be able to "reconstruct" the full product ID pretty easily. For example, 4-bolt mount vs 2-bolt, 1" tapered shaft, etc.

Here are a couple of pullers that should work.
Rather than use a torque wrench, which is an expensive item in the size required, you can just use your body weight and a little math. The formula is

Torque = BW x CBL

where BW is body weight in pounds and CBL is cheater bar length in feet measured from the center of the motor shaft to the center of your grip.

I torqued my hubs to 450 ft lbs.

Here is a link about torque formula and torque conversions

Thanks Kent. I called them just now and left a message.

I got a price of about $300 to rebuild the motor. The shaft was damaged as well as the seal. I am getting it repaired and very seriously thinking about getting the high torque wheel motors. I have been needing them for years and this is the trigger.
