Do I need a slip clutch?

With that short of a bolt I was thinking it had to be flange.

any idea if that is an oem shaft on that mower or a replacement one?

It is a oem shaft, clutch was an option. I got a good deal on the mower a while back and was gunna clutch it, still gunna, just haven't!!!!!

"Joe, What were you running for tractors in those 20 years? I bush hogged for 5 years with my Ford 841D on the same shear pin, traded for the Kioti DK45S & broke 3 pins the first hour. Live electric PTO is much different than the old Ford. I broke pins from too much power-much too quick. Same shear pin since adding the slip clutch & learning to idle down before engaging the pto. Over running coupler is pointless on tractors with live pto. MikeD74T

NAA....8n......small Kubota. The next shear pin on a cutter I replace will truly be the first one I do. Everything from Gramma to Blue Stem, Mesquite to small Cedar, rocks, stobs, stumps.....never busted one without breaking the 3-pt linkage first.

I recently added a Eurocardan slip clutch to my Land Pride RCR 1872 rotary cutter (6-foot). I do a fair amount of custom pasture mowing and was regularly breaking shear bolts on stumps, rocks, dirt piles, etc. that were hidden in the weeds. What a great addition!!!!!!!! No more stopping out in the middle of the field for 10 minutes changing a bolt.

This one was purchased through Agri Supply for $83 plus shipping. It included the Grade 8 bolts needed to install it. No installation instructions were included but the instructions included with the mower had the necessary "burn-in" and adjustment info.

I had asked my local dealer a while back about adding a clutch and they told me that it was necessary to buy an entire drive line. Not so!!!

Try it, you'll like it.

Was out mowing with the batwing today.. glad it has a slip clutch.

a buddy borrowed my pasture drage and didn't put it back on the edge of the pasture like I told him.. he droppe dit 20' out in the field.. hit the corner of it mowing.. bow that was an awefull sound!!

just a couple nicks inthe blades.. but glad it has a torque limiter!

Joe, The Kioti has an electric engagement for the pto. Engagement is instantaneous regardless of RPM. Switch on the dash controls off, manual, auto. Switch on the right fender is kind of a panic button for quick disengage. Problem for me is the fender switch is right at elbow height. I'd hit a bump, elbow would shut off the pto, & without thinking I'd hit the button again to reengage. Banging in 45 hp instantly is way more than the shear pin can handle. Same thing will happen in auto as it disengages the pto when the 3pt lifts, if you don't idle down it bangs in again when the 3pt drops. Both work great but is much different than 8N or 841. I've run farm tractors since 1960. Other than that the only shear pins I ever broke were on a baler that picked up an occasional big stick. MikeD74T

I really like those electro-engage pto systems.

I've heard that some suposedly have a built in feather.. but I've yet to see one like that. I have only use done electro engage style and it was a mahindra.. wasn't impressed..

I've heard of and seen the discussions here involving the electro-PTO. One day I hope to have an electric PTO to deal with...........or maybe not. I guess it depends.

Joe, I wasn't a bit offended. My tractor experience goes in bounds. Grew up in 50-60's on 40's tractors. Got onto a 60's Case 580 in the 80's. Bought a 58'Ford in 90's, bought a '43 Cat D7 cable dozer in 2001, & traded Ford up to 2005 Kioti in 2005. The jump from 58 to '05 was a bigger change than the others. MikeD74T

A little late getting on this thread but the subject is still alive and well with me. I have a new New Holland TT45A and a 5 foot Woods mower. I don't have a slip clutch on the mower. I used it for 10 years on my old 600 Ford and never broke a pin. I will add that I mowed stuff off that I probably shouldn't have. I am thinking with the more horses I have now, it might be a good idea to go with a slip clutch. Putting the one that you can get right on the PTO looks like the easy way to go but I am not sure I like the idea of that thing spinning so close to my body. Sure would be easy to put on though.
