How safe is Manual Trans vs HSD

By the way the dealer had me do a little test while trying out the B2320 DT.

I forget if I was in Medium or Low.

But I was in 1st gear.

The engine was idle and he said pop the clutch (no gas needed).

So I'm rolling along at a crawl and he says hit the brake.

1*It did ABSOLUTELY nothing. It didn't even even slow it down, it was as if I didn't even touch the brake. There was not momentum here, I was crawling like a snail. It was brute power.

I know on my BX24 with HST it would stop when crawling along like that. Only at high RPM fully engaged HST it had power.
2*If I forgot to release brake on BX24 it would not move.

It was a little scary actually. If you panic and not hit that clutch you're in deep doo doo.

3*Why wouldn't you hit the clutch too?
1*It would be bad if car brakes worked like this as hitting the brakes is supposed to slow the car down even if the clutch is not hit.
2*If it moved the brakes would not be rite.
3*Why would you depress the clutch every time you hit the brakes on a stick shift car?

I didn't say I would

We were talking about a panic situation.

I would have to say it has pretty crappy brakes if you can't stall the tractor at an idle.

I was thinking the same thing!:D

Brakes not stopping an idling tractor in gear doesn't show that it has power, it shows that it has lousy brakes! The salesman was pretty clever to turn the deficiency around though. Good reason not to trust salesmen!

The brakes are absolutely fine. It was so geared down it was like a train and you just can't stop it. It will stop on dime if you push in the clutch.

My choice on a gear vrs HST had nothing to do with safety reasons, although I believe the HST to be a much easier drive to operate, and that in itself may make it a little more safe. I bought my Kubota gear drive L2600DT with FEL about three months ago. I was looking also at a L3010 HST Grand Series also equipped with a FEL.

After reading numerous posts on this site about HST trans, I decided on the gear model because I just didn't want the added maintenance of the HST. I use my tractor very little, very light work, and it sits-up a lot. I also don't know alot about tractor hydrolic systems, so I felt my best bet was a gear tractor. I can block my clutch and not worry about a several thousand dollar fix if something like a HST pump quits working for whatever reason. My belief is the more something isn't used, the more things get hung-up, stuck, etc.

I know people have the same type of preference for HST, and if I was using my tractor several hours a week, particularly using the FEL, I would have more strongly considered the HST Grand.

I'm sorry but the brakes should be able to overcome the engine at an idle.

That is also one part of my reason for going with gear. I like the simplicity.
Do you think these HST's will still be running like 50-80 year old Geared Fords and Simplicity tractors. I doubt it.

I also agree if your doing a lot of FEL work HST would probably be better.

I seriously doubt very many of these new tractors, HST or gear, will be running (much less still making themselves useful) 50+ yrs from now. New tractors aren't overbuilt the way they once were.
