Is the groove for the snap ring damaged ?

Also like Gene mentioned, looks like the shaft moved and now there's not enough sticking out ?, wheres the other end head to ?

In the first photo, look at the pallet and surrounding ground.

You are right. Didn't see that. Still, it must be pretty clean oil and surprisingly no trace on the gears themselves or the upper part of the case. Maybe someone tried it, it didn't work and so it was switched out rather than repaired. The whole issue could have been the missing clip.

Gotta be optomistic since he has already bought the thing at auction.:)

Ductape, The brush hogs were all quite new, gauging by the paint on the blades. There were some scrapes on the hood metal. Prices were okay, not spectacular--$626 to $675 for the 5' and $800 for the 6'. It was apparent that there were more people there to buy these than any other implement. NCA advertised 50+ New implements, but, they pulled half of them off the sell lot, making this not such a great buy auction. Note that the buyer needs to add 13% to the bid price to pay the auction house.

Corce, In fact there is just enough room for the gear to slide off. One can see on the interior paint of the cover where the gear finally came to rest. Once there, nothing else could spin to cause any damage, except the small nicks in three teeth on the middle gear.

Pulled half for what reason? To auction on another day to keep the prices up?

I'm looking for a five footer...... as well I'd like a five foot tiller. I talked myself out of going since I shouldn't be spending the money this year anyway.:( It did look like a really interesting auction though. :)

Willl, I never had a chance to use it, and it will be some time before I do. I sent King Kutter picturs and spoke to them today. They are sending me a new retaining ring (I am paying for it). The parts person, an older gentleman by the sound of his voice, said he had only seen this once or twice before. There doesn't seem to be any damage to the pinion shaft or the groove that holds the ring. Also, the two separated assemblies, PTO end and tiller blade end, both turn effortlessly and with no gringing sounds.

Ductape, I think your analysis of why they pulled half out is accurate.

That is good news. I thought someone may have trashed the top gearbox and went looking for the problem and failed to put the snap ring back on.

Put the heavy weight oil back in the gearboxes, 85w140. It may leak with the lighter weight stuff, I know mine did.

Willl, No apparent damage to the snap ring groove, and I don't believe that the pinon shaft has been moved laterally out of its bearings. I am thinking, and hoping, that the reason this happened was a poorly seated snap ring, or one that had been cracked while being installed. The oil was very clean, it just looks like it isn't there, but it was just leaking out the middle plug when that was removed, just like the manual says it should do.

Corce, I just went out and bought some 85W140. Yes, it was my immediate worry, too, that the top gearbox was the source of the problem. Finding the remanants of the snap ring by daylight and the fact that things turn freely up to the point of the missing gear was a great relief.
