Electric Fence to stop Bear

Thanks guys, This is some good stuff. I like also the fried bear. I wonder if I could use AC. This bear is a real problem. We can't let the girls [daughters]out to play without protection.
Yes, There is a fixed fence that I may wire. I think we have to get this bear. Never had this problem before. Richard

At the Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, NM they had to put an electric fence around the back country trading post to keep the bears from tearing through the walls. I know it worked that one summer but can't say / know if it is / was a permanent fix.

You're right about that note of caution. We always have bear around here but they are no problem if you dont tempt them by leaving food out or in trash, this one is a rogue.

Not all electric fences are the same. This one is for 2000 miles and puts out 16 joules vs. the normal 5 mile and only 0.75 joules.

Pricey, but that is what you might need. There was a sign at the store that showed what joules (power) you needed for which animal but I'm not sure if it's guarantee or not I would hate to pee on that one!!!

It would be a lot better to find ways to protect your property and family in non-lethal ways. We are the 'smart' creature in this story, we ought to be able to figure it out.

The way the human population is growing and expanding, there is less and less space for wildlife of all kinds. If the solution is always 'kill it', what will be left in the future?

It will be a sad and desolate place when we have just each other to look at while we slowly starve due to lack of biodiviersity or resign ourselves to eating stem-cell petri dish steaks.

I figured my comment would be like poking a stick in a yellow jacket nest. It's something I care about and try to live up to.

In the end its all about the value we place on things. I am pretty certain if we can build a fence to keep bison in, we can build one to keep bear out. It's simply a matter of how much you are willing to spend. Unfortunately IMHO, we think the bison are worth a lot more than the bear.

I was sick to read the news stories about the guy in Idaho getting bragging rights for (legally) killing the first wolf when they opened a season on them. I am not against controlled hunting/fishing of things you can and will eat, but sensless killing is sick behavior.
