Skid pads??? Needed? Necessary?

/ Skid pads??? Needed? Necessary? #21
I plowed a lot of snow back in the days I lived in Ohio, used a pickup truck with an 8 ft western blade. It came with round shoes that were curved up all the way around. Several friends had the Myers plows that came with the straight shoes. We all found that when the first heavy wet snows came, nothing seemed to help from taking the gravel with the snow. When it came to short driveways we would take them off and raise the plow a couple of inches and GO SLOW. After the ground froze and we got the "regular" snow we never used them. So mine ended up on a shelf in the garage.
I finally solved the problem once and for all....... I moved to North Carolina!!!!!! :)

Wahooo! Got it done.

I cannot express my thanks enough to all those who suggested the pipe on the front of the blade. I had a big ol' scrap of 1 1/2 sched 40 so that is what I used. Ran it through the table saw, it cut just fine. One slit was not enough, couldn't get it on nor keep it on. Ran it through again, side stepping 1/2 ".

Perfect. Fits like a glove. Here's to hoping it stays put. What a wonderful idea. Thanks again to everybody. Can't say I am anxious to try it, but I feel better prepared for the inevitable.

1.5" Sch 40 works good.

I asked about sched 40. Got this reply from you, Duffster. Took this advice. I meant PVC, you meant steel. Oh, well.

Gonna give it a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, or lost in this deal.

I was wondering how you thought you where going to cut steel pipe in your table saw. LOL

LOL

Duffster, a bunch of guys PMed me and offered advice on both steel and PVC

Although some preferred 3", which naturally I didn't have any handy, only 1.5 and 4" scrap. I went with the 1.5

From all accounts the PVC is pretty good, we shall see. Well, it's cheap too.

Thanks again,

What I do is back drag the blade in order to create a compacted base.
Naturally that only works with a lighter snow fall, like 2-5 ins.

My other option si to blow away the upper snow leaving about 2-3 ins which I then compact to create my base.

Know you guys are all keen to clear snow (seat time), but seriously compact your base first.

I'm sorry to say but I bet it wont stay put or intact. I had a similar setup on my rear blade with a thin metal pipe but it got chewed up on my gravel road. I switched it to a thicker pipe and it lasted longer but I still needed a way to hold the pipe in place so I added a spring. This worked well but I eventually bought a snowblower.
