Yeah and I don't need to buy $100+ forks for a one time issue, pretty rare I am working around pallets or similar items at all. I think your way would be best, though you do have a larger bucket, and tractor. I guess my only concern would be the small bucket on the BX fitting a tank that is about 24" in diameter, I'll ratchet strap the top down, and the bottom 'in' so that it can't move, then I'll do the same and keep it as close to vertical as able.

you're overthinking it. Just put on the tiller like you wanted and drive up to bed of truck. Slide the AC onto the lip of bucket and far it will go and strap her down. shifting to 4WD, low gear, rpms around 1800-1900ish. You will be fine, once you back far enough , lower bucket to lower cog and finish moving the A/C. (this is what I have done with top heavy things from my trailer.)

The weight is no problem. Last year my wife wanted a 540lb fountain she found at Costco. I moved it into the backyard with the BX loader (be sure to hook up the box scraper for counterweight). The problem is having it tip over when curling the bucket. The BX bucket is only about 18" high. I added a "backrest" to the bucket similar to what you find on quick-attach forks. Every week, rain or shine, I haul our garbage cans up the driveway to the street with this. Two of the huge cans fit perfectly side by side in the bucket. I've had this setup for 5 years now and I've safely moved a lot of stuff I couldn't otherwise, including a full size refrigerator.
Probably overkill for a one-time use but you could easily move a vertical air compressor with this.

My upright compressor came bolted onto a small pallet. Still sits on the pallet today 8 years later. How many people take them off the pallet even though the instructions recommend it? How many people actually bolt them to the floor as recommended?
I would move it like you suggested. Slide it into the bucket from the truck. Strap it down well - both sides, front and back. 4WD back up a little and lower it to near the ground. Important to keep the bucket flat when lowering the compressor to the ground. Drive slow and slide it out of the bucket when you get it where you want.
I agree that you should be able to do it fine with just the bucket, pallet forks are a great thin, I welded up a set from some from a steel beam that was just lying around and I use mine all the time. I did see a set on here that a guy made out of wood that look pretty nice and would certainly hold 200-300lbs. you could add those to your project list

BTW, is this one of the Harbor Frieght reconditioned units for $159?? Thats a good unit.. The same as the CP and BelAire that cost five times as much!
