THANKS for the compliments Jacob, very kind of you. Tires and wheels,...yes they are difficult to do so you can perhaps imagine how long I spent trying to get the rears on the Massey to look "somewhere" like real.

I don't know how many sheets of preliminary drawing paper I went through, rubbing out and doing over and over,...and over and over till they looked okay. Same with anything that is awkward and it becomes a challenge,..so you stop and take some time out to just work up that one item till you get it, then go back to your main sheet.

You heard the Pro's (above) mention the difficulty drawing such things as "stairs",...same thing. Practice and more practice Jacob, just like anything, it takes a lot of work,...but then comes the reward of being able to do it finally.

In your PM's you mentioned "track" tractors you've been drawing. If you care to share, go ahead and post them up. I'm sure from past response, there are some others who'd be interested seeing them also.

Driving through our small town the other night, I thought of you with such great interests as your school work, your math, your drawings and your tractor to say nothing of the chores you do,......at the same time, I passed groups of teens hanging out here and there smoking and being loud with NOTHING better to do,..bored with life,..and I was wondering what trouble they would get into before the night was out,..what damage to public property?

It sure made me proud of you,.. thinking of the things that keep you busy and off the streets !!

Good Luck to you Jacob,

Hey, as was mentioned before, I was a heck of a lot older than you when I scored my first tractor... so good for you, buddy! Nice to see the pics of your dog, my girl keeps an eye on me, too!

Jacob:

There is nothing wrong with using drafting templates to help get the wheels and tires looking right. Just make a light pencil sketch with the template and once you fill it in, no one will notice the construction lines. There are also templates for ellipses of varying degrees of rotation.

A good art supply store should have templates, or be able to get them for you. I haven't bought anything from this company; but here are their templates section. Templates - BLICK art materials

mjncad : ....yes I will also thank you very much for the tips and ideas regarding the use of "templates". I guess it's about time I visited an Art Supply Store for a look at the template items.

Other than a pencil, ruler, protractor, good compass, a French Curve and a "large" eraser, I've never had, seen or used other drawing tools. I managed to pick up a very good mechanical drawing table with swing ballast, large table and all the moving T-squares, variable angled straight edges etc. for a hundred bucks from a guy who says the computer outdated the tables. I am ecstatic!! (Think he said he paid a couple grand for it years ago?)

THANKS for the ideas,...What a grrrrreat place this is! Your tips to Jacob have opened my eyes too!!
Didn't mean to hijack the thread.

You got a bargain on the table, etc Tug. Although the computer has essentially done away with manual drafting for design, I still wish I had a good Hamilton or Mayline pedestal lift table with a drafting machine for layout work. I did very little manual drafting professionally as I went right into CAD after my three month summer job at Sundstrand Aviation came to a conclusion in the summer of 1979.

mjncad: ...yes thank you, I realize I got a bargain. The guy was a retired draftsman, the table was under inches of dust in his garage of junk as we hunted for some unrelated item. When I asked about it, he said "give me 50 bucks and its yours". I gave him the hundred and still felt guilty,..but I dreamt of having one for years.

Didn't know they were so doggoned heavy,..took the two of us to wrestle it onto my truck and into my house and then set it up,...WOW! But I love working with it,...it is a dream!

Always thought I could draw withOUT templates or french-curves,...but man do they ever make life more interesting! Thanks again,..I hope Jacob takes your advice!

Best to you,

Big Bri : ....electric?,...electric? ...just curious, how does "electric" affect a drafting table? He gave me a couple of "electric erasers" for use with the table but there is nothing electric about mine. Just curious how that works,...but don't get me wrong, I don't want to buy yours.
