I thought it was the rafters that didn't have the frost.. I think the rafters store up heat and then give it off while the rest of the roof freezes.. That's my bowl of bean chili..

we used the floor joists that have plywood sandwiched between two two by fours .

that must be the wrong picture, Those look like 2x12's..

You were right about the headers being a low r value area if they only give you r 4.5 in a 2x4 wall. This forum is a great place for memory exercize..

Jake, you are absolutely correct...I posted a picture of the floor system for the 2nd floor and they are 2x12's but here is a picture of the basement ceiling or 1st floor system and these are the fabricated floor joist I was referring to...You have a sharp eye..LOL - I went with these over the all 2x4 type since they are all one solid piece as opposed to the truss like structure and after 5 yrs. not problems.
