Greed or not, I just don't like the haggle pricing. Never have been good at it!

Layne

The thing about haggling, it takes time and information. In places/countries where haggling is common, you get lots of information because your friends and acquaintances aren't shy about asking how much you paid for something and where you bought it. That's how they keep track of the going price and where to get good prices. They check the quality too.

I don't care to waste time doing it. Probably not good at it either. When you dicker with a car or machinery dealer, you are always at a disadvantage as a buyer. You really don't know what the item is worth, all you can do is compare offers and take the one that suits you considering all the factors behind the offer.

Also consider you probably have to visit a dealer multiple times to haggle successfully, a complete waste of your time, not the salesperson's. We've all been through the drill at a car dealer, you make an offer and they have to go check with the manager. That's total BS. All they are talking about is the weather while you wait some more. Remember, you have places to go and things to do, they work there. :D

Anyone who doesn't have the time to investigate prices and get offers on a big ticket item, must have enough money that price doesn't really matter.

The worth of any item is what it is selling for in the free market, hopefully this is more than the cost of production and distribution, but it doesn't have to be.

I recognize that a dealer is much better than I am at negotiating so all I can do is get offers from multiple dealers and then decide. If I spend 2 or 3 days looking into prices and save $2k, that is a pretty good return on my time.

I find the time like most I suspect. It isn't a matter of simply comparing offers Dave. To get into decent prices often you need to invest time to the extent it becomes some sort of game. Who needs it?

In any case, you have no way of knowing if your best offer is a reasonable markup or not. All you can do is decide if you are happy enough with the price or not. For people in rural non-farm areas, there aren't going to be that many tractor & attachment offers to compare to begin with.

I think you are missing my main point - other people are willing to waste your time to their benefit.

duffster/nubota, you have the right to waste your money in any way you see fit.
I'll drive about two hours to save a g note.

My B3200 HSD w/LA504 loader, grill guard and 54 in bucket spec'd out at $18863. I paid $15070 tax and United 54 box blade included.
Breakdown:
B3200 with LA 504 loader : 14335.00 23% off MSRP
United box blade: 425.00
Tax: 310.00
2 kubota hats and 2 kubota car tags.
Loaded tires, full tank of fuel, and delivery to my home included.
All this at 0% for 60 months.

Purchased from Dothan Outdoor Equipment within 15 minutes of walking through the door. I asked for the best price and 1 hour later I was home on the new tractor.
Also, I have no problem haggling, but since all my patients are from Dothan and surrounding areas, I try my best to buy locally. Keep the business at home.
Kubota was the only make I looked at, I was prepared from this forum and many other internet sources to pay around $17000 delivered to my door.
Pleasantly surprised!!!

Also, I had a couple of very small issues, they came out picked the tractor up and delivered it back within 6 hours.

jeric, you got a good deal from a good dealer, I'm waiting for the Three Amigos to post that this dealer won't be around long, or that you won't get service from them or that- yes, you had a gray market product foisted upon you....

I like you, prefer to keep my money local, but Meg and Ed didn't raise a fool-and to be clear I would gladly give my local dealer/s a few percent more.

Let me be the first to say this:
One of two things is going to happen:
In the near future you will see Kubota do what Deere did and go to other retail sources BECAUSE of what the dealers are doing

OR, the more likely course of action,
Kubota will close an awful lot of dealers and go to a few centralized 'outlets' in each State

And when this does happen Kubota will own the market.

The dealers WILL harvest the fruits of what they have sown.

Dave, Curly gets your point exactly-YOU can afford to take any offer, working folk cannot, trust fund perhaps????

I think neither of you get my point. We were discussing the merits of haggling I believe. At least that's what I thought I was discussing.

Now, which is more efficient for the customer, to be able to access a current price list online, or call/drive around talking to a salesperson to find out what they want to sell their equipment for? And then ask them if that is their best price, for how long, will you throw in this or that? If you enjoy doing that, fine. I do not happen to.

Which method can be done 24/7? Which method takes less time?

Secondly, ask yourself who benefits from the current way tractors are sold? Obscuring the pricing is never to the buyer's advantage. Have you ever lived somewhere that haggling is the rule, not the exception?

I doubt if I will ever drive 2.5 hours to get to a mall again. Online sales are so easy by comparison. Online retailers are doing quite well, especially compared to traditional retailers without a web presence.

While I may not by a tractor by adding one to my cart, I could surely benefit from a modern approach to tractor sales. Making a big mystery out of pricing is hogwash, and we are the hogs.

Exactly,Good post,as long as the dealers keep pricing the same as it was in the last century, they win. When pricing is brought into the 21st century we all win. What is a fair profit? 2%,5%,10%, 15%, 20%,30%. Some seem to think it is fair for a dealer to make as much as they consider fair. 30% at $30,000.00 is a nice $9000.00 profit. If you are a member in certain groups you can get nice discounts. If you are a member in the AQHA (or some other groups)you can get as much as 23% from John Deere. Here is the site: http://www.aqha.com/association/benefits/membersplus/mpjohndeere.html Guess what John Deere still makes a profit. I know J.D.takes most of the hit not the dealer, but can you even imagine the mark up on a Deere. I am not upset that groups get discounts. As a member of the Pa. farm bureau I get discounts from both Case International and Chrysler,up to $500.00. I just want you to see that their is a lot of profit in tractors. I owe no dealer anything,I would like to see everyone have a chance to get a good deal. This idea that it is somehow to complicated is just B.S. A car dealer deals with a lot more models and options and some how you can get Consumer Reports to give you an actual number, for any car you want. I would like to see Consumer Reports or some group do the same. Do I not trust a dealer? No offense but no I do not, unless I know him pretty good. If you go to a dealer you have never seen before and trust a price he throughs out,I got some beach front property for sale in Iowa, want some?

Well Dave I gonna go for another 10 points here:
The mutant topic was whether or not it was worth the effort to save just a few grand by spending -hours- on the phone.
I have to try and save money, you don't, good for you.

I got a pm saying that 60 points is good for a 12% discount at Messicks, but I kinda sorta think someone is playing with me....

wampum, a dealer is not entitled to a fair profit, he/she is entitled to any profit that they can make.
