Interesting about the coyotes being attracted to tractors. My parents neighbor has approx 150 acres that he farms in his spare time -- mainly wheat, soybeans , etc. He was working a few hours one night and left his tractor in the field and went to walk back to his truck. He mentioned seeing at least 7 coyotes and being a little nervous.

Most wildlife will tolerateequipment running especially a tractor and bushog. At work when we mow the finished cells or any other flat land as soon as the mower hums theres a big hawk that comes to stay with the tractor. Ive seen coyotes do this to. When Im building brush dams deer will walk almost to the dozer as long as its moving and idled up.
When I was younger dad got me a mule for a pet. We put her in a borrowed pen at the neighbors There waas a huge cane break there and it went to a spring. Dad was working about 80 hours a week and I had a job that we both got in at the same time. We would ride down there and feed the mule and check her oout then go in. Dads friend had a 24 year old horse and he was going blind. It always stayed behind the mule till we left the trough then eat. The neighbor went on vacation with his sone watching the house. Dad and I were working till dark and the old hosre was still standing back from the feedtrough on tuesday night.
Wednesday we had a bad thunderstorm we came in and fed and left right then. the next night we fed and the horse didnt come right up to eat so we left the next day we got a bad surprise the son went down to the pasture and notices a smell. Trigger had died in in the spring. Dad said he had been there at least 2 days in August heat. It was a mess, where the horse was standing there was a big gum tree that had been stuck by lightning we think the old horse was struck when the tree got hit

UPDATE

My neighbor saw a cougar running through his field yesterday. I have never been able to talk to the horse people but there is one in the area for sure. Never thought I'd see the day so far south in Ontario. (1 hour northeast of Toronto).

I lost 2 chickens last night, they were the rogues who would never go in the coop at night. Hmmm.

Those chickens got their Darwin Award, but sorry you lost them.

Every 4-5 years somebody in Maine swears they have seen a cougar. The Fish&Game folks never seem to be able to 100% verify those sightings. It would be something if they are moving into your area. Maybe they feed on coyotes :)

In my opinion, coyotes wouldn't kill a horse. They have been known to work in packs and bring down larger animals, but I don't think it common. On the other hand if the horse was old or sick, who knows.

that'd be my thinking as well. we have cyote here, and while they attacke smallewr prey live calves and foals, goats.. etc.. i've not had one take on a full grown large, healthy animal.

now a sick, blind or lame animal sure..

Here in mid Michigan, cows and horses get shot pretty much every year. Sometimes it takes weeks for a wounded animal to die. The average hunter is a slob, but most won't shoot animals just for thrills. But some will. There is a reason why virtually all property is posted "no hunting" around here. But if it has been days since he checked on the animal, who knows?

That's a pretty offensive statement. I have never been to Michigan, but that characterization of hunters certainly is not representative of the hunters I know here in S.C. Most hunters are conservationalists, good stewards of the land, and admirable in their behavior. We deer hunt a cattle farm and there is absolutely no way that the livestock are endangered. And land here is not posted, quite the contrary, most land is leased to hunters, or owned by hunters.

As far as shooting animals for "thrills", nothing could be further from the truth in describing hunters. If your description of your neighbors in Michigan is accurate, I think I would move elsewhere.

:rolleyes:300uguy, you've only met a handful of hunters if that is your opinion of them. I know a great many that are just the opposite and that's just the ones that I know. Someone can just as easily make the assumption that all folks with the name 300uguy are ?*&$%#@...I'll stop the old person is coming out in me!

Harold, nicely put.
