Cooling welded connection

Just what in this forum fits in that category ?

I suspect that some people are talking about quenching red hot metal and others black hot. There is a lot of difference in how this affects.

Anything that if it comes undone someone could get hurt.

And many FARM IMPLIMENTS do fit that category for sure, IMO

Agreed, and that's alot of my point.

By the time you get ground disconnected and the piece brought to water, 'red/orange' is gone.

Remember, we're talking 'backyard/garage' stuff here.

I was gonna say I've never done it in all the years I've been welding, but I must have cause I know exactly what it sounds like.

That sound kinda tells you it's not real happy :(

Just cause somethings made/repaired in a back yard or garage, doesn't make it less critical.

You have been lucky.

Rapidly cooling a weld is a bad idea
it causes differential stress in the metal in the weld and the surrounding metal
in the HEZ =Heat Effected Zone

Some metal will become hard a become like glass ...snap...that's a bad thing

Some metals like cast iron need pre and post heat treatment so it expands and contracts evenly otherwise it will distort or i have had it crack while it was just air cooling but it all depends on the base metal you are working with

As a rule of thumb don't do it ;)

Cast iron is not even a question. Don't do it. Welding cast the metal should be uniformly preheated first, then allowed to cool S L O W L Y. Many people will keep hitting it with a torch to slow the cool, or bury it in hot sand. mild steel is more forgiving of quenching but cast iron is NOT friendly to quick cooling.

Cast iron is a different beast altogether. Rare is a welder these days that knows how to braise or NiRod cast iron. Cast iron is becoming a thing of the past.

My last post on this one, and disregard if your working for NASA or 3RR.

If your welding old bed frame together or repairing a 3pt implement or equivalent and it's too hot to handle after welding, don't worry about blasting it with the hose.

It won't change a thing.

Well then, I guess that's the final word! ;)
