You've got more guts than me, taking on that magnitude a project in the dead of winter, but I understand the benefit of the 'hungry' contractors!! Good Luck! It'll be awesome! ~Scotty

There's a fine line between brave and stupid. Time will tell what side of that line I'm on.

Maybe I missed something here,,,

At first I was thinking the new concrete was for walk ways for the new entrance, mostly cause I didn't see any 'footings'.

What I'm I missing ?

In that last picture of my first post you can see the floor of the basement storage room. I think they poored the floor and footings all in one poor. You can see the footing for a retaining wall extending toward the bottom right of the picture.

The picture attached to this post is from today. The walls are all framed up and poured. They're adding a porch cap on Monday.

Here are a few more pictures. The first is a view out the front door.

Since there seems to be some fascination with the idea of cutting a door in an existing basement wall, I've included some pictures of what is there right now. If you click on the picture to enlarge it you can see daylight through the saw kerf.

I had to pick up a tub today for the bathroom we're adding downstairs. I wanted a one piece, and the only way to get it in is through the door that is cut under the window. There will be a brief "window" of opportunity to get it in between when they knock the cut slab out and when we frame the door in. It's going to have to move through the house one small step at a time. We'll drop it into the storage room before they add the porch cap. Then we'll move it through the doorway before we frame the door in. To get to the other side of the house, there's a door that I have to move about 2 feet. I'll open it up first, move the tub through, and then frame in the other side. The last move will be when they cut the old plumbing out before they install the new. Cutting the old plumbing will open up the head space for the last move.

Here's a question:

I had to put holes in a 55 gallon plastic drum to use as a french drain at the bottom of the stairs. I put 1/2 inch holes all over the drum about 3 inches apart. Now I'm wondering if 1/2 inch is big enough.

Do I need to drill the holes out bigger?

I'm trying to figure out how you maintain frost protection for the now-exposed portions of the footings?

In the midwest, we have to keep the bottom of footings at least 36 inches below grade per code.
