my first question about the toyota accelerator problem is simple:
why didn't any of the drivers just kick the trans into neutral and let the motor blow?

That is a option if it happens in a open area. But some of these people are pulling their car into the garage and let off the gas and the car goes thru the back wall before they have time to even react. A couple of weeks ago in Louisville KY. four people in a 2010 Camery pulled into a store parking lot and car took off as they pulled in to a spot, car jumped curb and went straight down an embankment hitting nose first and going over on the roof in water filled ditch. Driver is paralysed( as of last report). News said one of passengers said they didn't even have time to scream.

If you put it in neutral (blown engine is better than a crash)I wonder what Toyota is going to say about a blown engine( I thing most every car now days has a rev limiter but it still wouldn't be good on a engine) My guess is they would claim abuse and not fix it. Can you imagine all the people who would try to get a new engine by blowing old one on purpose, if they knew Toyota was paying for it.
Really man my throttle stuck wide open an she just blew:rolleyes:

TURN KEY OFF or hold in START BUTTON FOR 3 seconds says Toyota.
3 seconds is a long time when car is accelerateing.

It is easy to set at a keyboard any tell everyone what they are doing wrong.
Why do people pull out in front of other people? How can a car cross 100 feet of grass thru a ditch and hit a car head on, on our interstates? Now add a mechanical problem to the equation.

Be careful out there even if your not driving a Toyota, others are.:)

Had a motorcycle stick WOT on me one time. The butterfly got jammed in the bore (old bike). It scared the crap out of me at 100 mph until I got the sense to kill the ignition. Worst part was pushing the bike home, but's really hard to say what you'd do until it happens to you. I have to say I'm up to my ears in gas pedals, but Toyota is paying good for us to fix them. That is one difference I'm told between Toyota and domestic. Toyota warranty actually pays pretty well.

I hope at some point people will realize that Toyota is JUST ANOTHER manufacture no better and no worse(although I not sure about that after the last few weeks) than anyone else.

Don't hold your breath while waiting for all the really pleased Toyota owners to suddenly realize their personal experience is a fluke, myth, or their lack of being as enlightened as you or the talking heads on the news.

I have owned exactly one Toyota but was extremely lucky I guess, l got one of the very few goods ones that at 50,000 plus miles has so far been the most trouble free car we have ever owned and our stable has included a very nice Mercedes Benz Turbo Diesel sedan and a fancy Lincoln in addition to several Ford trucks and a Dodge truck. Funny thing about all those disappointed Toyota owners with miserable MTBF records, they sure are quiet.

Available statistics do not support the hypothesis that Toyota is "just another manufacturer, just like all the rest." Ford is not just like all the rest of the American makers either. They didn't hold out their hand for corporate welfare and get baled out of bankruptcy at my expense. Yea FORD!!!

Oh darned, it gets to be time for a proper response to the original poster and loved ones.

Why are you letting your loved ones drive/ride/be on the same road with one of those dangerous cars???:confused: Until this problem is solved the loved ones should be kept home and off the roads!:(:(

So if my wife hits the back of the garage with the car, it isn't because she is a lousy judge of distance it's because she was unable to stop the car from doing 40 mph when she pulled into the driveway because the accelerator stuck :D:D:D:D-- oops she is driving a Korean car not one of them thar Japanese slimy jobs:p:p
Oh well --the dents she made match the ones her mother made with the Dodge:D:D
Course the real safety thing might be to warn other people when I know some drivers are pulling out of their garage:rolleyes::rolleyes: -- especially those ones that look like a praying mantis behind the wheel or who suffer from sudden vision impairment whenever they are put behind a windshield:eek:

On the other hand, DO HOLD YOUR BREATH if you are unfortunate enough to find yourself upside down in a body of water because your car went wild in a parking lot and wound up in some body of water. That would convince you quick!

And if you are barely able to keep above water financially, do hold your breath if the silent recall you wish you could get is so silent your dealer didn't even hear about it. Or if you are poor enough, maybe you just live with it because you know you can't afford the repair anyway. It must be your hard luck kicking in again that YOU have the problem, but no one else seems to.

I think Toyota is a fine car overall, but the "don't hold your breath" comment just struck me as unfortunate giving the earlier post about being upside down in water. Also, the part about missing the detrimental aspects of silent recalls seem like your were being deliberately obtuse in light of your other comments.

The only vehicle I ever owned that took off by itself was an 88 Bronco.

Now if I'm driving my Lexus or Camry and get chased for speeding I can tell the cop that it took of by itself and I was trying to stop it.:)

I had an Audi turbo 5000, the orig. 'wild accelerator'--
and it took off suddenly on me but as luck had it I was on a divided highway at 3 AM with no traffic to speak of.

With the Audi, a simple kick of the peddle would free it up or cancel the cruise control.

The down side was a traffic cop clocked me while I was in the 'acceleration mode' and when I pulled over they came at me (both officers) with guns drawn.
They scared me more than the wild acceleration did.
