Legality for transport in the USA:

At 120gal of tank capacity you need a CDL with 'tanker' endorsements. This is required for ANY liquid... even water.

If you have more than 500lbs of hazardous material you need a hazmat endorsement also.

If the tank is < 120 gal, and DOT approved, and attached to the vehicle fuel system and 'permanently mounted' then it is exempt from the need of a hazmat endorsement.

I would mount a 100gal tank on a pallet and take it to be filled a few times a year. Your fuel will stay fresher, you'll be legal, and it will be easy to handle via a set of pallet forks.

What I'm thinking about is that since I only live about a mile from town, maybe getting a small tank mounted on a 3ph. Just hook up and drive in when I need refilled. Like someone else said, no more of those 5 gal cans to wrestle. Anybody tried this idea?

Not quite, at 120 gallons of hazardous liquid capacity (such as a tank other than that of your vehicle fuel tank) you do need to have a taker endorsement. However, for non-hazardous liquids (such as water) the tanker endorsement is not needed until you reach a 1001 gallon capacity.
Logging and Transportation Safety - FRA Technical Releases on Safety

Edit: from the NYS DOT CDL training book (http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/cdl/cdl10sec08.pdf):
This section has information needed to pass the CDL knowledge test for driving a tank vehicle. (You
should also study Sections 2, 5, 6, and 9.) A tank endorsement is required for certain vehicles that
transport liquids or gases. The liquid or gas does not have to be a hazardous material. A tank
endorsement is required if your vehicle needs a Class A or B CDL and you want to haul a liquid or
liquid gas in a permanently mounted cargo tank rated at 119 gallons or more or a portable tank rated
at 1,000 gallons or more. A tank endorsement is also required for Class C vehicles when the vehicle
is used to transport hazardous materials in liquid or gas form.

1*Why not just use several 55 gallon drums. They are really cheap and work great.
1*Yeah that's right.
2*Just use 2 or 3 and fill them in one trip and work off of one
3*Sure beats those new, improved worthless 5 gal
containers.
1*Yeah that's right.
2*That's exactly what this set up is rigged up to do; handle any number of drums and sizes of drums such as 15 30 and 55 gallon.
3* Sure does.

1*I didn't use saddle tanks but i did use 2 barrels.
2*I conncected both these drums to the red 12V pump over by the light and put a shut off valve on each hose to each drum.
This gives me the option to pump from either drum.
The long hose running along the wall curled around the green hanger is an extra hose used for pumping fuel from any container I wish.
I also use it to transfer a load of fuel from my truck to the set up drum or drums.
3*I fill the taller 55 gallon drum with the long hose hanging on the wall and pump from the shorter 30 gallon drum.
This arrangement allows me to:
always get 55 gallon of fuel each time .
Always keeps the power service mix at 1 quart per 55 gallons constantly.
Never mixes the new fuel with older fuel.
I always have a 25 gallon reserve supply when I order fuel so am not likely to run out before delivery.

CDL means Commerical
A private Party not operating a business would not have to meet this requirement right !

LBrown59,
I live in Alabama.
1*Nobody here uses home heating oil (diesel) to heat their homes and I mean NOBODY!!! We all have heat pumps or the occasional wood stove.

I'm going to share this tank with my neighbor and good friend.
2* I prob. could get by with all the plumbing you've done, but would prefer one tank with a tank mounted pump. If I took two drums at a time to get filled I would still be hauling 110 gallons of fuel. :ashamed:
3*I'll post pictures when I get the tank.
Chris
1*HHO and diesel are the same fuel here.
There must be more than 2 farmers in your area. Whander what they are using and how are they are
handling it?
What about all the Contactors wonder what they're using for fuel and are they getting it. ?
2*I could have gone with a portable mounted pump but I chose to mount the pump stationary .
It can be done either way.

I have bought 2 portable 100 gallon tanks so far off Craigslist, one for me and one for my brother in law. Each came with a 12 volt 15GPM pump with hose and filters. The most I paid was $350 for this set up. They work well and I just use a portable jumper battery that I picked up from Sams club for $30 to power it up when I need to. I mounted cast iron rollers on mine so I can keep it inside my shop and just roll it where I need it. The bulk suppliers come out and top off both tanks and our 3 tractors whenever they are in the area. I am well satisfied with the setup. I find these Pickup portable tanks all the time on Craigslist in the Houston Texas area. I prefer the 4 foot wide x 3 feet or so tall ones rather than the L shaped ones but the fit handily in the back of a truck & dont roll around. They have lift tabs that you can use to lift the empty tank but not to be used to lift a fill tank. Full tanks need to be strapped or use forks to take them out of your truck if you need to fill them that way.
