Where I live, folks interpret "posted" to mean "good hunting" and/or "poachers welcome". In my opinion, those signs are nothing more than a waste of paper and time, especially for the absentee landowner. Posted signs are similar to gun-control laws in effectiveness. They will work with decent law-abiding folks, who you would likely welcome on your land, but they will also attract those you want kept off. I thought it would be a good idea to post the farm I own today back when I was a young punk and my grandad owned it. He told me he didnt think it was such a great idea. I should have listened to him. The couple years those signs were up, I frequently found folks up in my treestands when I went hunting, and found lots of evidence of poaching. Since the signs came down, more than 20 years ago, I have found no more evidence of poaching and have not had to kick anyone out of my stands. I have also not had a single incedent of theft or vandalism. If you are an absentee land-owner, posted signs are particularly damaging, because they will turn off the local decent folks who would otherwise look out for your interests when you are away.

On our 40 acres here in Colorado we target shoot. I have the fencing topped with T-post signs. Red plactic frames that slips over the top of the T-post on the pasture fence. Then you can attach any sign you want. I opted for the signs the NRA sells on their web site, "CAUTION FIREAMRS IN USE".

As for the driveway we leave the gate unlocked. I would like to lock it. But since the driveway is 3/8 mile long and I cannot see the gate from the house due to the terrain, I'm a bit stuck. Some ranches out here use solar powered gate openers and post private drive/no hunting/no trespassing signs. Thats ok for them I guess, but how does the UPS truck/propane truck/trash truck get through? Unless I install a keypad and pass-out entrance codes.

I would recommend however good exterior lighting on motion sensors.

Where might that be?
As I understand in some places there is a legal difference between posted and not. Not posted- law enforcement can ask someone to leave. Posted- they can arrest them and remove them by force if necessary.

At our ranch in Central Texas, we don't have a problem with trespassers... clean livin ? Naaaaaaaa...

I have spoken of this before and will repeat it for the benefit of everyone that doesn't hang on my every word... yeah, I know, shocking isn't it?

In Texas, one doesn't need to post signs. There is a shade of purple paint (ask at any reputable paint store) that we can pain on the tops of fence posts, etc and that serves as a warning that that replaces the necessity of trespassing signs.... I know it sounds silly but who wants to continually be replacing signs? This paint can be used on fence posts, rocks, trees... The paint must be at least 1-inch wide, and if memory serves me correctly, 18-inches high...

Even though this law was passed several years ago, the average Texan is unaware of it... Ignorance is no excuse...

Here you go, Dougster, and any other Texan with an interest. The specific portion pertaining to the purple paint marks is as follows:

D) the placement of identifying purple paint marks on trees or posts on the property, provided that the marks are:

(i) vertical lines of not less than eight inches in length and not less than one inch in width;

(ii) placed so that the bottom of the mark is not less than three feet from the ground or more than five feet from the ground; and

(iii) placed at locations that are readily visible to any person approaching the property and no more than:

(a) 100 feet apart on forest land; or

(b) 1,000 feet apart on land other than forest land

For the entire statute:

We have a key pad as you stated, and our servicing companies have the code. I also have video surveillance on the gate which is recorded 24/7 (3 cameras). I have a 2'x3' video surveillance sign in the middle of the gate. The last guy who ripped us off parked right in front of the sign. We had a beautiful recording of his liscense plate.

Around here, if a property is fenced and gated, it is considered to be posted even if there are no signs. I found that out from my neighbor who is a deputy county sheriff.
A land owner shouldn't need to post his land to guard against intruders .
All the notice a trespasser needs is if this land ain't mine I don't belong here .

Part of the reason I post our road is that it is really only a one vehicle width road with several pullouts. The less traffic the better. Also living at the end of the private road it seems they come down to our place but not the two neighbors that also use the road.
The "Notice End Of Public Road" I just put up yesterday, cost $25.00 and is on 15 X 15 inch aluminum stock. The "Private Property" sign I remounted on a different tree. Probably can't see it but there are two bullet holes in it.
When people come down our road I can at least ask them which one of the 8 signs did they miss.

my parents live at the end of a dead end road. People will sometimes keep driving right into their fields.
