screw type log spliter

Well. As luck would have it when I expressed a preference for the screw splitter here about four months ago I had no idea how soon my wish will come true. Sometime in Late December I bought one of the Burk Busters that just happened to have gone up for sale about 20 miles from my house. After reading and thinking I gave it a good try. IT WORKS FANTASTIC!!! I agree with all the warnings and stuff but it is just another tool that one has to be careful around and then it saves a lot of time and energy. Just like a chainsaw or tablesaw or you name it. I'd like to have a self-powered hydraulic splitter but those cost many times the amount I spent and essentially do the same thing.

does anyone know where I can find one of these, like the setup like the hydrocut or the hycrack?

thanks for that, does anyone know who makes one similar to these, preferably for sale in the US?

If it was made with a dead mans foot switch of some sort I would not be as leery of it, some type of electric clutch that would kick it out instantly, (not that one would not get hurt possibly but most likely not dead or disabled,

I saw that same Craig's List ad myself.

I can't say I'm that big a fan of the screw style log splitter to begin with, but with this splitter moonlighting as a finger amputating/appendage mauling rattle-trap, you couldn't pay me enough to use it.

Someone was WAY braver than me to use that thing.

They may look dangerous, but so does an axe hanging on the wall. :D

I would say this! the danger factor with this device is up there on danger scale ! However so was gunpowder , axes, chainsaws, etc. I wouldn't just jule it out but I think safety features need to be built to lessen mishaps .rolling over tractors through ignorance has killed more thN this device but you don't say don't drive a tractor ,4 wheelers kill thousands! You get my point. Everything must be used with extreme caution! Some people shouldn't own a car or triuck! Be careless in one of those and your just as dead.

Since January i work for the first time in my life at a large manufacturing plant where they obey all the rules... We spent 5 hours on a risk analysis of the suspension testbench i'm designing, assessing all the health and safety rules. At some point i said a little aggrevated: "whe shouldnt try to be a better catholic than the pope. Even a hot mug of coffee is lethal if you pour it all at once in the wrong way..." which made my colleagues laugh and say that they enjoyed my down-to-earth perspective...

I think Lasco was on the right track, they mount them on an escavator. I think I've seen them adapted onto pole hole diggers too by old timers.

Well, At that rate, We better start splitting now so we can have a half cord in the shed by late December....

Looks like an easy way to split those big trees into a manageable size for the splitter, and makes good use of a post hole auger that otherwise doesn't get much use.

We have an old 3pt hitch screw type splitter that's been sitting out back for decades, I've looked at it a few times and wondered how it worked. Now I know and I must say simple, useful idea, but I see how things could turn bad if it wasn't used with care.

I wouldn't want to handle firewood without leather gloves, and you wouldn't dare wear gloves running this thing. A lot like getting close to a bit in a drill press or running a lathe. No thanks on this one.

I like the screw splitter on a toro dingo. I don't like the screw splitter on any of the other arrangements. It is too easy to slip and fall into it- especially as your center of balance is shifted toward the screw when you are feeding it by hand. Once that screw grabs you, it would pull you in- agonizing way to go.
People are always cutting their fingers off with a conventional wood splitter, or with an axe or splitting maul. Always an element of danger- some some stuff is less safe than other stuff.
