Need to buy a disc

   / Need to buy a disc #12
Before I bought my own disc I used my friends Landpride which looks to be what TSC patterned theirs after. I is a great disc. Having it be adjustable is really a big benefit.
My own disc is a Leinbach angle iron one. Tough as nails. Here in East Texas I have iron ore deposits that like to spit up rocks every once in a while. The disc has no problems with them. It's a seven foot one.
If you are doing a garden or small area of land then a tiller works ok, but if you are doing several acres, a disc is the only way to go. If your soil is hard packed then use a bottom plow first. There is actually a really good video on Utube showing how to prepare a garden from hard packed land using a plow and a disc.
I bought my disc used for $400.00. You may want to look around at auctions, etc and save yourself some coin.

I need to prep almost 10 acres so discing is the way to go I think.
While I don't have a bottom plow I do have a subsoiler. Hopefully that and a bunch of disc passes will get things ready for grass seed.

FYI a good tiller and your tractor can till this 6"s deep in 12 to 14 hours, still need a finish pass with a harrow to get ready for seed.

It will be interesting to see how long it will take with a disk sized for your tractor. I have owned and used both disks and tillers and don't see where there is that much difference. With my current tractor I can till 7"s deep at 1 acre an hour.

Bought a County Line sub soiler from TSC not long ago and the first time I used it, it broke.... poorly welded.... VERY poorly.... They seemed okay by my returning it for exchange except they didn't have one in stock and didn't know when they would and suggested that I drive to the nearest TSC that had one... about 80-miles round trip.. The Dougster ain't happy... wait until they get one in stock or re-weld it myself? Doggoned frustrating for sure... ergo, I'd be careful buying a CL product in the future...

Yes, I have the a KingKutter square tube 6-1/2' disc and I paid 6 yrs ago near what yours was advertised for , so that don't sound like too bad of a deal. Mine disc has been very durable, I did finally loose a couple of sealed bearings and got them from Agri-Supply for 'bout $9 (Chinese) apiece. I use my disc for primary tillage and the till, especially old pastures. Sometimes I'll even plow first and then till. bjr

To me a disc is a poor excuse to burn fuel. I had one, never performed the way I expected, sold it and bought a 6' rototiller. Now I know what happens behind the tractor at the depth I want. I equate them to a four thousand dollar paint job on a two hundred dollar car. Looks good, still remains a 50s engineering night mare.

There are still places where a disk has its place. If you have excessive trash from a previous crop it must be diced up somewhat -- perfect use for a disk. Also, if you want to plant grain or grass with the minimim amount of soil disturbance (like if there are below surface obstructions like stumps or other trash) -- perfect useage for disk again. And, if you spray a bunch of sod and kill it, then want to cut it up but you don't want to actually moldboard plow to turn it under -- disk.

Come on, that's just silly. You likely never had it set up properly. It all depends on what you're doing. A tiller is great for gardening. For actual farm work, a disk is the proper tool.
