yep. he is right 12 hours later the weld didnt fail the metal beside it failed
i like the gusset idea and we are also talking about reinforicing the subframe to reduce the amount of stress applied to that area. i am also looking at replacing the block but nh wants 2000 for a new one, just the block not a short block. i probably couldnt sell the thing, at least not on here..:D

I would not try to reweld the block. Pick up the new one or try to find a good used. Shame of it all is the tractor is not even paid off. Problem is even with the new block and subframe who is not to say the same problem may not occur again??

Another typical example of companies cutting quality to save an additional $50 or less. Heck, I would bet a beefed up block and clutch housing would have cost less NH less than $25 to begin with. All they would have is a little more money in steel.

greystone..Just a thought...If that had happened to my TC-29 I think I would do some research on the internet and with NH dealers to find if this is a known issue and then I would file a suit against NH and the local dealer in Small Claims court in your country..It is not expensive to file and most often they will settle on something like that to avoid the chance in could go public and turn into a class action and it is cheaper for them to settle than to pay attorneys.

In my neck of the woods small claims court limit is $2500. I don't think that'll be enough to get a long block, you get the lawyers involved and it might cost you less to make lawn ornament of your old tractor and buying a new one.

Reviewing this again probabaly the best option is to trade it in just like it sits. The dealer can repair it for a lot less.

Just curious, as a non-welder (if you discount the round bar magazine rack I made in high school shop class :)), wouldn't gussets welded to the block also cause the block to fail next to the gusset just like the original weld of the crack caused the nearby block to fail?

ok guys time to pony up whos got the tc 30 block. I had orginally thought of suing nh but the leagle eagle i got ahold of said that i might win if i could afford to.....but yea some more yard art is allways welcome and this way i can sit here and belly ache and tell anyone who will listen that if your looking at nh you might be looking the wrong direction. of course now that fiat owns them its not home grown anyway, who cares..by the way when was the last time you saw an ad for fiat anyway...heck they dont even send me the nh magizine anymore....even the dealership that i bought it from went belly up.
i wouldnt mind owning a diffrent tractor, one that works and does the job.
can actually take abuse and doesent cost me money everytime i turn around.

thanks for all the great posts and support..mike

Ok; Anyone here know who the current persons name is who heads up the compact tractor division of CNH? Then send a certiified letter addressed to him and plead your case; nicely. Explain everythiing you have done ( including all the help from this forums 76,885 members).
Include all photos, detailed info and ask; NICELY; if CNH could help with the repair of this problem as you have asked, on this 76,885 member forum that is viewed around the world, if this is a problem, and you have found documented cases of this failure.

Never know; if you ask nicely, take the time to ask; you may receive.

That's worth a shot.

I've decided to send mine to the dealer for a new bell housing and of course new clutch parts while it's opened up. It's never been to a dealer in seven years, so I have a little list of things I may as well have done while it's there.

My tractor has done a lot of work and I have used it to the max plus of it's abilities. I wish they would have put more strength into the bell housing area in a compact with the loader and backhoe stresses that the older tractors just didn't have. Maybe even have designed it with a frame cradle under the engine/transmission that handles all the torque stresses. It would be a lot better to deal with a broken or twisted frame member than a cast iron bell housing.

Well, I will get it fixed and hope for 10 more years, but I won't be using it as hard as I have. I really need a J. Deere 310 TLB :D
Dave.
