There are remote switches and outlets that use a 120khz signal on the powerlines that enable you to turn outlets or lights whatever on and off or even dim them without pulling a switchleg. Made by Leviton and very reasonable too.

Go to Menards and get 4/0 al with a 2/nuetral it wil pull 200 amps all day long and the best part is it's $2.00 bucks a foot. It's direct bury with hard plastic INS. . If you insist on conduit put in 3" , it will pull aloe easier. Some of the largest utilities in the nation use this cable. 2 reasons, it's very cheap and very durable. I've been installing this size cable and others for over 25 years andcan tell you it's by faaaaaaaar the best bang for the buck.

I have read back through this thread twice now and suggest the OP hire or consult with a licensed electrician in your area to assist you. Reason being about half the replies are way off base. Being a licensed electrician myself I am not interested in a pizzin contest and you can't verify the credentials of all of the posters (myself included). You should probably have a permit anyway and I suggest you go thru the right channels from the gitgo.

Some of these posters are way off base, may be well meaning but wrong nonetheless.

I would say that is good advise.

Per the posted calculator it would take 3/0 to get 100 amps to the barn 265 foot away using Al.

Gale that is at 240 volts, but I don't see any 240volt loads do you? If you plug in 120volts in the calculator you will find that 3/0 is rated for 50 amps each leg and that the 4/0 is rated for 60 amps each leg.

Steve I see the 120 vs 240 volt difference. My mind can not grasp for the price of one wire more one could have 240 volts for future use while the ditch was open. :)

Gale,
Well I agree with you but what I am saying is with a four wire service to a branch panel is that with 3/0 wire feeder you would have a 50 amp 240 volt service. You would have two 120v 50 amp legs.
