Mine held more than the manual said to get to the top line but If you have almost 4 in there already it should be showing at least. Wow, it's a mystery. I don't think it should make a difference which cap you put it in. When you pull the drain plugs on either side does oil come out? I'm for more oil but better follow your own instincts.

Yes - when I saw i made this ....mistake....I dropped one of the drain plugs and it flowed fresh oil so I am very sure its errrr in there however why no show on the dip - thats the thing that gets me.

Looks like both are oil fill plugs.

Dealer call time - I have ~1.5 Gal in there now and its at the 3/4 way up the dip. For whatever reason the sump isnt showing what is really in there (and yes I made sure the dip stick was fully seated.

Why they dont show 2 oil fills in the manual is beyond me. When you look at the manual it easily to get the two mixed up since the manual uses those pencil sketches and it showed the Oil Fill next to what I thought was the air-flow intake when it really was showing the muffler.

Oh well quite a lesson learned.

Thanks to all that chimed it - its great to know you guys are always there!

Wow that's a lot of oil plus some will go into the filter when you start it. I'm thinking they may have made a modification to the amount of oil that engine can hold since the original production and original manual or something. Where the heck else could it be going - it's not running out on the floor or you would be standing in a puddle by now.

Relax, These engines are simular to Marine Gen Sets I work on. They too have two fills very simular to yours.
This is prolly what is happening:
The "lower" fill is where all the internal gears are for the cam, inj pump, crank, etc. When you fill there it drains into the sump slower and from the front ( or rear ) only.
Since you have a semi split sump one is filling more than the other, and the less full one is prolly where your dip stick is.
If you fill from the top fill the oil drains down more evenly and is more uniform in the sumps.
And no, filling from the top will not fill up your cylinders:laughing:. Your pistons tops are not exposed to the crank case.
If your still worried, drain both sumps and guestamate the amount of oil.
Then re-fill from the top.
PS: I should add that I fill thru this lower cap all the time. Gen sets in boats often have a floor right over them, so no access to to the top fill, however the top fill is faster.

You've got me convinced, GT2.

Hey jambx, I've done a lot worse. I think anyone that is an amateur or professional mechanic has done something like that a time or two. That is how we learn. And have fun, too. I wouldn't be too hard on Kubota for not having both fill points listed in the manual. The place where you put the oil was not wrong. It went into the engine like it was supposed to and did not cause any damage. You could have paid the dealer to do the 50 hr service for you, but you took the inititive to do it yourself. In the process of doing this you learned some things about your tractor you may have never learned otherwise. It's all good. Have fun and put that tractor to work, now. Good luck.

GT2 - thank you for allowing me to sleep a little better tonight. I am convinced you are right on with your summation.

Toolguy - thanks too for the kind words. I am mechanically inclined to a point and changing oil and filters is usually not too difficult but I have heard things like this have happened more than once and we all know the consequences if we were to put the wrong fluid in are area its not suppose to be!

bstrom - I still owe ya for getting wet for me :D

Thanks again guys!
