I agree. My local Ford Dealer just got 25 4.6L V8 2010 long bed regular cab trucks in stock last week. $16,400 no haggle price. They have auto, air, bed liner. They are nothing fancy but are a lot of truck for the money with great heritage.

That would mean about 2200 gal. of fuel before you break even. That would mean 30-35 thousand miles to offset the purchase price. I think that will be a hard sell.

35,000 miles is two to three years of driving for the average driver. I don't see that as an unreasonable break even point.

They are still only offering an automatic. I will hold out for the eventual manual shift.

That's a great price on a good basic truck...
When my son totaled his car 2 summers ago, I was able to get him into a 2006 F150 base truck for 10,500...
That truck only had 28K miles on it and he loves it...
You ain't gonna do a lot of heavy towing with it, but with the 6 cylinder engine it gets real good mileage...

Don't hold your breath...I don't think a manual is even be available in any 1/2 ton truck in 2010. Ford had one available with the V-6, but the V-6 is now history. If it is, it won't be for long...Even among the big diesel p/u trucks only Dodge now offers a manual transmission.

It's not suprising that it's taking a long time to get certified here, seeing how the feds are trying their damnedest to kill the diesel vehicle market in this country....

Better hurry, they are canning the Ranger. Ford is only going to have the F-150 up. To be honest with the smallest engine, a 4.6L V8 2 Valve making about 240 HP, it get about the same MPG as the Ranger and cost about the same.

Local dealer has 25 of the 2 wheel drive F-150 small V8 Short Bed Regular Cabs for $12,999. They are XL package but have auto and air plus a cloth seat and a bed liner. Great deal on a work truck that can pull about 6,000#

Ford has been on a roll lately.. But this is a bonehead move.

Ford could keep the ranger. Install a small euro (clean) diesel and sell every one they make.

The south american Ranger is a nice little truck, with the diesel that would sell like hotcakes.

Made in Brasil so it'll be cheap on the lots here....Why cant we get it? Oh right.. the protectionist chicken tax:mad:

(yes i know im canadian, so we technically could get it, but ford wont bring it to canada if it cant be sold in the states so the chicken tax effects me too)

I had an '83 S-10 pickup and the only good thing about a compact truck is its maneuverability; otherwise I'm pleased with my F-250 and prefer full size PU's.

Since Ford is dumping the Ranger and I saw something in this thread about the cloudy future for GM's and Chrysler's small pickups tells me the American makers are surrendering the compact pickup market in the USA and Canada to the Asians.

Also, I suspect Ford wants to make sure the compact Transit that is popular in Europe gets more market share without having to compete in-house with the Ranger. I saw a Transit at the Denver auto show, and it seemed like a decent little work van. After all, the Transit is most popular vehicle for criminals to commit crimes in Europe according to Top Gear, so it can't be all bad.

I just saw a Transit van in DC. Are they being sold here now?


Been selling them here in Indiana at my Ford dealer for a year. To be honest the only ones I have seen on the road are UPS brown ones. Not sure who is buying them but they would be great as a News Paper Delivery Truck or for a Flower Shop, ect, ect.

The Ranger is out of date. Small trucks have become mid-size people haulers with very little utilitarian value. A full size truck does almost everything better at almost the same purchase price. The four dour pickup sealed the deal on the small cheap handy truck.
