We've had some cougar sitings in Maine including one on the coast but I don't think they have been confirmed. I've read it is coming back to it's eastern range. No Grizzly though! The occasional Black bear and moose running around here on the coast - much more inland. I like wildlife but being stalked by a mountain lion could put a damper on your day. A friend of mine here on the coast was getting firewood and got stalked on his back forty by two eastern Coyotes, which I guess are a little larger. One circled behind him while the other crouched, he was not to far from his house and walked in. He is disabled and has a cane sometimes. I wonder if they could sense that? Weird.

We our starting to have issues in NY with mountain lions and coyotes which were released buy our fabulous D.E.C. To control the deer population. This backfired when they started eating people and pets ! The Conservation denies all of it. No surprises there.

Personally after doing a bunch of research on snakes in Texas it turns out that they do more good than harm. There are only a couple that are to be avoided and they are usually brightly coloured so we stay away from them.

Now ferel hogs are a totally different subject. They are a real menace. They destroy everything. Lately they have been damaging the wild turkey population as they have been eating the turkey eggs. So when I'm on the tractor I usually have this along with me.

Incidently, we in Texas like to have things that can do more than one thing at a time. So after use with the tractor we have a really great meal.

You can take care of the hog in multiple ways... kill it and then grille it.

I've collected firearms for over 30 years. I wasted enough money on the Taurus Judge pistols for everyone here. I have some bad news for you if you have one. Unless you're shooting a snake or a mouse or something similar, you're just going to be cruel and would the animal or have it die days later.

I first bought a regular Taurus Judge. After firing 6 or 8 boxes of .410 shells through it I considered it a complete and total joke and got rid of it. Apparently not having learned my lesson, and getting fooled by the produce killing sales video, I bought the 3 1/2" magnum version of the pistol. At 5 paces it would not penetrate 1/4" plywood my target was attached to with 00 buck shot! What a freaking joke!! Those who don't know better try to claim that their .410 will shoot 00 buckshot at over 1100 fps. as listed on the box. Wrong! That's based on it exiting a 20" barrel. With a Judge, you're basically just firing the cartridge. The best I got was about 600 fps based on using 2 different chronographs. Most were closer to 450 to 500 fps!

Like I said, you'll kill a snake or a mouse with that but not anything much larger. If you use it for personal protection, you're in for a very rude awakening if you ever have to use it! There are a lot better choices to fire the .45LC, and that's your only option for personal protection in a Judge except for maybe a .410 deer slug; if there is such a thing. I fortunately dumped that 2nd Judge and won't ever be fooled again into buying a .410 pistol! I'd rather take my chances with a .22 pistol for self defense than a .410 pistol loaded with anything but .45LC ammo.

Personally, on my tractor I'm generally only armed with my FEL or rotary cutter. I've never seen a snake yet that's tried to break into my cab. If I am packing, it's because I'm on remote areas of my property and my concern would be 2 legged attackers.

Having no experience with this firearm and intrigued by your response, I checked a back issue of Gun Tests, the only gun magazine that I truly trust as it accepts no advertisements and their results pretty much mirrored yours. They viewed it as being effective only on small rodents and snakes out to about ten feet or so.

They could get a good pattern only at about three feet and after that it opened up a lot with lots of space between hits.

Like I said, I never shot one, so I don't know anything from personal experience, but won't be adding one to my collection.

The real problem with the short barrel handgun/shotguns is that the powder in the shell is slow burning and designed to gradually and completely burn in long barrels. The power does not burn efficiently and much energy is lost as the burning powder reaches free air.

You could reload with a fast burning powder, say DuPont 700X, and get much better performance. A bit too much work for the occasional shot however.

Edit: Another factor I've found is that the pattern from a short barrel is way too wide. A .38 cal shotshell in a 2" gun is like throwing sand. In an 8" barrel the pattern is much tighter.

The T/C pistol has a choke to stop the spin from the rifling and tighten the pattern. It works best with #5 shot or larger since larger shot tends to tighten the pattern and have more pellet energy at distance.

Well, that sure sounds like govt. to me. If Michigan can call what the Federal Govt calls a rifle a shotgun, sounds like they could call any weapon what ever type they wanted. So I am hunting with what the Feds call a rifle, in a place that Mich. laws says I cannot use a rifle. By definition, they say in a shotgun area, that I can only use a shotgun, and then go on to describe the shotgun in such a way that is is by federal law a rifle. My head hurts........:confused2:

Don't try to understand the rationale behind gun laws or any laws for that matter. It only matters that you understand the actual administration of the law. Just another couple of kookey examples for you, in Ohio certain semi-automatic firearms are considered "machine guns" under Ohio law if they will accept a magazine that holds greater than 30 rounds. I'm not totally versed on that law, but as I understand it, the law was basically interpreted to preclude ownership of magazines with greater than a 30 round capacity in concert with certain other firearms. Also in my home state of NY, the term "firearm" only applies to handguns, short barreled rifles and short barreled shotguns. Rifles and shotguns have their definitions as well, but under Article 265 of the Penal Law (weapons section) anytime the word "firearm" is used it does not refer to rifles and shotguns. Like I said, as long as you obey the law, you're probably better off not trying to understand the reason for why laws were written the way they were. Laws like sausage are things that are best to avoid watching being made.

Gee, do I feel foolish. I could have saved a lot of time and money if I subscribed to them still. I can't recall why I quit years ago. Clearly my real life experience was apparently what they said. Good marketing for Taurus and I'm sure they made a lot of money on a "fad" pistol. I post my findings to hope nobody carries one thinking they have "the ultimate" personal protection pistol as it's advertised. In heavy winter clothing, a center mass shot may not even draw blood past about 10 to 15 feet. Not going to make them happy, but if you ever need to shoot, you better do more than make them really unhappy.
