Tractor gun, what do you guys think?

Dargo,

Thanks for giving all of us a "heads up" on what the Judge can "really" do. I had been planning to get one for my wife. She wanted one after seeing Dick Metcalfe shoot one on one of the shows on the Outdoor Channel I think. As you said marketing can fool us. Around here the gun dealers have them back ordered due to popularity. I haven't fired one and don't know anybody that has one but I'm going to drop that idea. My wife likes her single action cowboy guns better anyway.

I have a Glock 27 (.40 cal) with me most all of the time, on the tractor or not. We really don't have many snakes in this area, it's just with me because in case of two legged predators (unlikely), four legged predators (other than stray dogs, unlikely), or crazy people that want to talk to me after seeing the cruiser in the driveway (slightly more likely).

I do not step outside our home unless I have my Ruger Alaskan 44 mag loaded with Corbon 305 grain penetrator ammunition and my Taurus Public Defender Judge loaded with Winchester PDX1 .410 shotgun shells . They are with me when I am on my tractor also.
We have a lot of bears around and also mountain lions, and we also live about 15 miles from the Bob Marshall Wilderness. I have noticed when the deer are no where to be seen, it usually means there is a bear or lion nearby . The wife has bear spray stationed at each exit door so she can grab the can when she goes out. If I am in the house and need to send a bear on its way, I will grab the 12 ga. and put a rubber bullet round in there butt and they will leave in a hurry. When the bears are sleeping for the winter, I will switch out the Ruger Alaskan for my Ruger LCP 380. I also go outside with my early warning system, Hanz, my German Shepherd. :D :D KC

You'd even be well prepared to go into Houston's 5th Ward. :D

I will just throw this out there "for what it's worth". When I worked for a living, I only took my weapon off when I went to bed. We qualified a minimum of twice per year, did FATS once per year and sat through a two day "Safety Training" module with one day in class room and pepper spray certification and defensive/disarming tactics. Each year we were told one of the most dangerous things was complacency, "it can't happen to me" or just taking everything as routine. The training was the same every year, but we needed to be reminded and my job wasn't even all that hazardous.

I am guilty of doing this in my retirement even though I live in the area I worked. I often go unarmed as I feel no real "need" to.

A year or so ago, my son came up to get some gear out of our camper down at the barn. He was gone for quite some time, but we didn't pay any attention. After quite some time he came through the front door covered in dirt and blood. A couple of transients were in the barn and decided to "borrow" my son's truck. Fortunately he spent four years in the Navy on a VBSS Small Boat Contraband Interdiction Unit with LOTS of training then joined the Army 82nd Airborne 325 RSTA Unit and other stuff and is now a Police Officer, Firearms Instructor and SRT Team Member. They could not possibly have picked a worse person to attack. He did not want to shoot them so just broke or dislocated one of their arms and scuffed them up a bit.

They escaped into our woods and were long gone by the time locals showed up and it is believed they jumped a train that comes through our property.

I am old and couldn't whip my grand daughter, so I would have been seriously injured had it been me who went down there. Chances you will ever need a weapon to defend yourself is very unlikely, but it could happen; just a thought.

Good post, TripleR...
I'm one who carries a firearm the great majority of the time. I don't ever expect to use it in a self defense situation...and hope that never comes about...but I'll never be a defenseless victim.

Looks like a very cool gun I want one. About no trigger guard this gun has to be cocked to shoot, do not go running around half cocked and you should be ok. 9n owner soon to have tym t350

I am going to take my own advice and start carrying more often myself.

Hey two bit score, I think I will just stay in Montana. :D

Just a word about the Taurus Judge, before you throw it away, look at Winchester's new PDX1 .410 ammunition. It has 3 Defense Discs over 12 plated BB shot in a 2.5 inch long shell. 752 fps from a 3 inch barreled Judge. Disc penetration is about 10.5 inches and the BB shot penetrates to about 5.5 inches in 10% ballistic gelatin. That is why I will carry one, but not too good for distances over 20 feet, just about the same for the 2 inch barreled .38 Specials. (information is in Guns&Ammo, June 2010 issue). :D :D

On another issue, years ago the .380 was not much of a self defense firearm, but with the break throughs in ammunition, it is carried by many.

F.Y.I. When I use to have to qualify 4 times a year, my carry firearm was and still is a Sig Sauer P229, .40 S&W.

These are just my opinions, as there are plenty of great firearms out there. :D :D :D KC

My favorite gun, but we were required to carry Glocks; good gun, but sure not a Sig.

We could also carry the 2" .38 which we found to be very accurate and shot them on a B24 out to 25 yards.

Strangely enough, I carry a SIG P229 in .40 now and can't wait until we switch to something else. I like the P226 and P239 well enough, but the P229 never fit my hand right. Plus it's really too big for me to carry comfortably concealed with some of the clothes I like to wear (but I still carry it everywhere anyway). I shoot it well and always qualify expert but I just prefer something else. I'm hoping that we'll either be issued a Glock 22 or 23 and a Glock 27 backup, or be allowed to carry a personally owned Glock 27 off duty. It's just a smaller and narrower package which is much easier to conceal. Oh and outside of 1911's my split times are always the fastest with a glock. I really like SIG's, moreso the older ones than the newer ones, but I just never warmed up to the P229.
