Getting rid of grass and weeds in a driveway

I know, I know, everyone grew up using motor oil to kill grass on fencelines etc. But in Texas, it is against the law and penalties vary depending on how much you dump.

besides, roundup (Eraser) at my coop works great and lasts months. I usually only have to apply every 3-4 months.

Seems to me that a lot of our laws are a result of helping "irrational" people make "rational" decisions! 20-30 years ago they were spraying the road shoulders in the Carolinas with transformer oil laden with PCB's! Didn't make it 'right', but with scientific knowledge, also comes responsibility! I doubt many folk are spraying asbestoes insulation in their walls for insulation. Now we have to write a law against "Texting" on a cell phone while driving!!! Well, DUH! Did we really need a law for that? ~Scotty

Some laws are one size fits all...

A couple of my favorites are:

Ban on wood burning even with certified, EPA catalytic stove that was permit installed and federal tax credit to boot.

Another is an acquaintance's Grandfather was having contamination issues when selling a gas station in La Brea California... seems everywhere the samples were taken turned up high concentrations of hydrocarbons... well DUH!... anyone ever hear of the La Brea Tar pits? Oil naturally pools in the area since the beginning of time and the La Brea Tar Pit Museum is only a block or so away.

Often, after the fact, we learn that the "Safer" alternative is not only more costly, but, comes with a set of entirely new problems... law of unanticipated consequences... like mandated MTBE poisoning hundreds of water wells throughout California... or a rash of vehicle fires due to incompatible rubber fuel components and ethanol blended fuel.

If you really want to stop the grass from growing but a few bags of salt for a water softner and spread it around. Nothing will grow.

Been there - emptied out the salty lump from the bottom of my water softener salt tank, about 20 months ago on the edge of the driveway (during winter months). Slowly, the funny orange slime that was capable of existing in the salinated dirt is being diminished by the return of some type of mosses. The grass is reluctant to go near...

Letting my kids ride the ATV up and down the driveway kills weeds, grass and the like. The knobby tires constantly working the driveway are the key.

Beenthere,

There is no debate on this. This is no government conspiracy so "they" can take away your freedom to dump endless drums of oil into public waterways. It's basic materials transport, it's engineering, it's geology, and it's illegal.

I don't even need a law to tell me that. It's just piss-poor watershed management. Your prior post on the other hand, is exactly the reason we have to have "ill made" laws. Unbelievably poor post.

poring oil products on the ground will end up in the water supply some were wether or not that 200 gal over 20 years makes a difference ? here is some thing to think about lets say you want to sell you property and the person buying it wants a phase one report done that is the basic environmental evaluation report, buy the way a great way to not accidental buy a toxic waste dump... they test your well find traces of oil then start testing dirt low and behold your property is worthless and you have to pay a high dollar per yard to dispose of your drive way and infected soil. so while im sure it works its not really an option.

Just buy the glyphosate ,100x20=2000sq ft ,the size of a house it is a cheap and easy fix. I didn't say buy at some horticulture shop ,use an agricultural supplier.Generic brand not Roundup we don't have to worship Monsantoe the chief crook in herbicide industry.

You need something like a giant stirrup hoe. Something to slice in and under while not disturbing the surface.

Maybe fab. some thing to hold a couple of wide cultivator sweeps very close together...

I sprayed my drive with Glyphosate last week, and now all the weeds and grass are toasty brown. 2 gallon hand spray tank, drive is 1100' long, I used 2 tanks, and I was done in less time than it takes to read this thread. 2 ounces of Gly per gallon of water. I do it 2 to 3 times a year. That's 16 - 24 oz of glyphosate per year. If there are a lot of broadleaf weeds I sometimes add 1 oz of 2,4d per gallon to knock them out quicker. It doesn't get much easier or cheaper than that. I only do it after some good soaking rains and when the grass and weeds are growing fast. If you apply it after they stop growing when it's hot and dry you are wasting your time.

I do not know what the chemicals in it are, but I used Corasol on my gravel drive. It does not kill the existing grass and weeds but it stops the reseeding process. I pulled out the exsisting stuff. Did it two years ago and the weeds have just started to pop out again. I will have to do it again!!
