Purchased a new MS 290 Farm Boss.Started it after many rope pulls the oil in the resovoir stared to boil and the chain was so hot I couldn't touch it with bare hands,it actually turned blue.The local dealer said not to run fuel higher than 89octane.
Help, have I damaged this saw for good.I drained the old fuel and replaced it with an 89 octane mix as recommended.

The chain getting hot and the oil boiling has nothing at all to do with the type of fuel you have used .

You must now find out why the chain is getting hot .
1/ Is the oil supply hole in the bar clear ?
2/ Was the chain too tight ? Is it really loose now ?
3/ Are you sure you have proper chain oil in the front tank ? Forgive the question , you haven't put fuel or two stroke oil in the front tank have you ?

There is proper bar oil that is used for the chain, it is a fairly thick oil.
Could be that #3 above is the problem.

Thanks for the responses.
The bar oiler was blocked by a peice of what appeared to be packaging material. Very little oil was being dispensed to the bar and chain.
It runs fine now that was cared for.
I wonder if damage has been done to the saw as a result of the lubricant being boilied?

The most likely thing to be damaged would be the chain, and maybe the bar. You'll know when you use it next. I'm still confused by the fuel comment?

I too would be suspicious that the local dealer would make a comment about the fuel (assume it was in response to the bluing of the chain or bar). That he didn't decipher it was an oiling problem (lack of) or that he didn't set up the saw correctly (tested to show oil coming off the end of the bar), would make me wonder about his ability to sell and service Stihl saws.

If me, I'd go back to him for a new bar and chain. I doubt the rest of the saw is any worse for wear because of the blockage in the oiler.
