You sir are correct. Here's my JD 2-14 plow that I bought for $200.



The 3pt hitch mechanism on that plow was shot--wouldn't hold adjustment when plowing. So I spent about $20 on some steel and welded up a replacement. I suspect many old plows have this problem.

Just a follow up question, more for my own knowledge (or lack thereof)...

When you look at these two plows, does it look like the trip kit could have been an "option"/extra? If shear bolt protection was "standard", is that how it'd look on the first plow? Or, is the trip simply missing from the first plow and somebody cobbed it together using that upper bolt and hole? Notice those bolts are inserted in different directions in the two pictures, for what that's worth. I'm attaching the schematic of the trip kit image from JD Parts.com.

I think you are correct about the added option kit for tripping the plow. And correct about the shear bolt located above the pivot bolt (if indeed that bolt is keeping the plow from tripping). I didn't understand the "inserted in different directions" statement. ??

Oh, just that in the first plow picture, the nuts on the pivot bolt and the "shear" bolt are on the left side (the side we're looking at). In the second plow picture (the plow with the trip) the pivot bolt and the trip bolt go through the frame the opposite way with the nuts on the right side.

The drawing seems to show the trip bolt going through with the nut on the right side, so I was assuming the second plow has it correct, and it's possible that somebody had the bolts out at one time on the first plow and put them back the opposite way. Not sure than means anything really.

I'm mostly just wondering if that upper bolt is the original shear protection on the first plow, and whether it looks typical for a shear bolt protected Deere plow.

Appears to be the shear bolt, and "direction" or side the nut is on shouldn't enter into the performance.

I ended up talking him down to $300. I know, that's still too much.

Anyway, I've plowed a couple times with it the last year or so in my super hard clay. I've had to cheat the plow over on the beam (towards the inside of the right tractor wheel) to get the full width of cut and not leave an unturned strip of ground. It's well off the center line now and tends to pull the tractor a bit. In addition, even my 45hp tractor struggles sometimes, and I have to lift up on the position control. I guess all said, I've never felt I had the plow truly adjusted properly. This fall, I think I'll try to go more shallow on the top link pitch, and I might consider moving it over even more on the beam to cut less than it's share width (ie overlap the furrow a few inches). I suppose less draft might compensate for going even more off center. Thoughts welcome!
