I've had to deal with a bad dealer, and am now dealing with a good dealer. The experience with the bad one gives me a better perspective on pricing.
When my good dealer sold me aftermarket weights that had some form and fit issues, he took them back and then sold me the Deere ones at the same price. In essence, that was a deal. While the price was nice, his attitude and his "owning my problem" was priceless.
He also remembers I bought a competing product in '97, so he knows price is part of the picture. And a few times when he could not beat a price, he told me that he appreciated my coming to him and giving a chance.
So, I don't blindly buy from him but he always gets a chance. I don't always get a discount, but I always get a solution. If your relationship with a dealer comes down to just price, it's not a relationship.
Do I pay list? Most of the time, but that's OK because price is just part of the picture.

I can understand, when buying a new machine, that dealers give a discount off list. So going to different dealers and buying from the one with the best price is fair.(with caveats)
Going into a dealer with an attitude that we deserve a lower price is a different story in my view, suffice it to say, i don't do it. If my dealer wants to give me a brake I appreciate it and if he doesn't than I understand his position also. I don't know his margins or how they are constructed, that's his business not mine. I've been in business and there's nothing worse than the customer who thinks you owe him something because he graced your establishment with his presence.

I have been in the machinery business for over 33 years and some years ago my youngest Son joined the business. I always told him to "make a friend first and then make a sale". I think, all salesmen should adhere to that motto. He says that you cant always do that. I tell him that there is about 1 % out there that cant be helped. Ken Sweet

I agree. I have a 30 year lawn tractor that occasionally needs something. For the last 9 years I have always bought parts for from the same dealer. I never have asked for or expected any kind of discount.
Last summer a bearing on the mower deck spindle froze. I bought the part from the dealer but I didn't have a bearing press which was needed to install it correctly. After a couple of hours of trying to get something in my shop to work, I took the parts to the dealer and asked for help.
The parts man took my stuff and told me to come back in about an hour. When I returned the bearing was installed and ready to go. When I went to pay he charged my $10.00 for labor.
I know he could have killed me on the labor because I was at his mercy. He thanked me for being a good customer and I thanked him for the help.
Needless to say that was the first place I looked when I bought my new tractor. I did shop around at 2 other dealers but in the end the price difference was negligible. It was the service that sold me.

fwiw & imho,
With all due respect you are out of line with this post. No doubt John Deere is happy to have folks with your attitude, however, don't make assumptions about everyone else. An actual farmer with $100Ks of green on the farm should not have to pay the same at the parts counter as a guy getting new blades for his lawn mower...
I support American Companies when they make a good product a good price. I hate the Chinese and the JUNK they peddle. That said you would be amazed at where some JD Parts and equipment come from... Kind of like the Chinese made MFD Dana Axles under the new 5000s. JD is not the company they once were...
Should you question that pick up Hats, Precision Toy Tractors, Hitch Pins, and just about anything else you can think of at your local dealer. Tell me how much is Made in USA.

fwiw, I work in the optical industry selling German Scopes as a partial day job outside of building Custom 1911s. I am a hound when it comes to buying American. Start REALLY looking where this stuff comes from and get back with me on your worshipful attitude toward paying retail for Deere Gear.
A dealer who is on the ball can make or break a particular dealership. I've run into more bad than good. Generally lazy guys behind the counter who act as if they are doing you a favor to buy their product. I've walked out on more than one due to that attitude.

That is about the best motto any dealer or salesman could ever adapt. I give my customers the best deals I can... I take it something is going right as they come back again and again. My aim is to be fair. Some call who know what I pay as a volume dealer from the importer. To those folks I suggest they start their own business and they can get "dealer" cost as well. On the other hand I don't try to retire on any one sale. I want repeat business. The above quote is worthy of framing...
