Pest Of The Year - What's Buggin' You?

Biting flies.... they are brutal, swarming your head and all. Dowsing a hat in "Off" works a bit but not much.

Same here right now. They fly into your hair and even bite your scalp. If you go in swimming, they are there waiting for you when you surface after going underwater to get away from them. :confused2:

We have a terrible infestation of politicians here. Sprays and repellents don't work. I don't know what to do about them. We're spending a fortune on this problem.

At the farm, biting deer flies are the worst. They can keep up with me on the ATV at 25 mph!

Moles or voles!!! They are driving me crazy, I have vibrators, traps, posion, etc, nothing seems to work.

I have what works.... Dachshunds, 4 of them.. actually 1 will do the trick ;)
their ain't nothing going to move around here without them weenie-dogs noticing it even if under ground , although there is one thing I cannot let them get ahold of.... Frogs... one evening after turning them out for a while they came back foaming from the mouth  I thought to myself couldn't caught rabies that quickly plus they have their shots, I suspect that they had got hold of a frog, at night when the Dusk/Dawn light comes on the frogs gather for a feast under the light to eat the falling bugs, and the dogs run to that location soon as we turn them out, so frogs can become a pest around here as well

Squash worms. Nobody but me ever seems to have a problem with them. Last year i did not have one but i religously pust 7dust around the bases till the soil was white even after a rain. Talked to a freinds dad , he never puts anything on them so i tried not doing it this year. Problem is that they , the plant, dont show symptoms till its too late. They wilt then die. I have lost 2 tiny plants and 4 big ones to it 3 with blossoms and two with little squashes. I have yet to pull the first one and only have one large plant left and a bunch of 2 week old replacements. I am now coating the soil and will never again not put sevin on them. This time of year i should have pulled 2 times already.

I've pretty well come to an understanding with all the critters around here. The carpenter ants have runs in the yard but as long as they stay away from the house we're cool. Spiders eat the flies and feed the song birds. The beaver can come and go, but doesn't touch the trees with wire mesh on them. Raccoons are to stay out of the chimney and the boat. It's too breezy here for mosquitoes or biting flies. Foxes, coyotes and cats take care of anything that might dig in the yard, and each other. So that just leaves the pickerel for me to try to control. Darn things seem to be everywhere I look this year. ;)

I have to go with the biting flies also. Deer flies, Horse flies and Buffalo gnats make Summer miserable. I just step out the door and they are waiting for me.

This year it's SLUGS! I have never seen so many in all the years I have been living here. We have been setting record rainfall for the last three months which I'm sure is the reason for them. They have cost me hundreds in damage to my tomato crop this year and it's inside a greenhouse. I can only imgine what it would be like if I had outdoor crops planted right now. It's been so cool and wet, none of the other "normal" insects we get here have been a problem this year. If I could figure out a way to turn slug slime into biodiesel, I could run my truck and tractor forever.

That sounds like a big cane toad. The poison the toads back and kill a dog or a cat. You might want to look up what you need to do to protect the dogs in case they go after the toads again.

Later,
Dan
