Throbbing in 4wd

   / Throbbing in 4wd #11
This is a long shot, but fits the symptom of fine in 2wd, but throbs in 4wd, since in 2wd the shaft transmits no torque, but in 4wd, it does.

Is it possible that you could have created a U-joint phasing issue.

On the shaft for my mid-mount mower, the splines which allow it to telescope have one special spline that makes it only go together one way. On my generator PTO, the telescoping portion is triangular, and will only go one way. If your drive shift is not protected similarly, could you have mis-phased the yokes?

Please read the bottom of this link if what I am saying is not clear:

EE_Bota - YOU NAILED IT!! Thanks a bunch, I went out realigned the u-joints so they were in "opposite" each other and in-phase and it worked. Thank you so much, it probably would have taken a pretty experienced tech to check that out. The link you included helped a bunch, because I didn't really know what you meant.

Great site, great help, thank you.

Pretty funny that was it because it got me to thinking about your issue today while I was driving out to a job. The u-joint alignment or phasing EE Bota mentioned really stuck with me. I was thinking how the first time I had even thought about it was when installed a Gear Vendors overdrive in my Ford truck. It mentioned this. For the heck of it I tried installing it "wrong" or not synched correctly. Turning it by hand I could feel the line load up with each revolution. Set it up correctly and it was smooth. It also got me to wonder if it was installed originally with some kind of issue. A roll pin just should not shear with out some overloading issue.

Oh, Good! Much cooler than digging into a greasy old axle, only to find the same problem exists. Good luck with your BX2200. I do love mine.

I had the same problem with my old BX2200, before I got the BX22. EE BOTA hit it on the head. Sometimes the oddest problem can be fixed with a very simple solution. Invest in the shop manual if you can. It's a big help with things like this.

This is good info, something I never knew, and will now check on all my PTO driven implements !
