To cab or not to cab?

I own a 4400 (35 Engine HP, 30 at the PTO) for 2.5 acres...most of that machine's work is mowing one acre.
You got a problem with that?



I guess I really don't understand why guys would even care what others own. I sure as h3ll don't. The only thing I can figure is they're trying to justify their spending the money (more to themselves).

:laughing: No I don't have a problem with that If you actually read what I wrote, I said a 3x20 series for taking care of a house on ONE acre is crazy (to me). People can buy and own what they want. I used my 3720 to take care of 20 acres and mow the outside of about 200 acres of field. I think its too small for that, so I have a 4520 on order.

I think its funny how you say the cabbed people are justifying thier purchase. I dont need to justify it, I absolutly love it and would recomend it to everyone. It is what it is. I also like my Fords, and many people don't, but if your looking for a truck and ask my opinion, that would be my answer.:thumbsup:

I think you are wastiing your breath. While I definately prefer to work with my 110tlb and 4520 with cabs and ehydro I remember when all I had was my OS 820 gear tractor. When the 820 was all I had I was happy with it, but when I was able I bought a canopy for it. Still had to contend with the light cold rains in the mountains, a wet seat after the rain and on and on.

Yes people defend their purchases to a degree, but I know what I want and try to make my own decisions based on those wants (their not really needs). There are people here who would prefer to have a cab tractor or ehydro but can't justify it in their minds or budget. There are also a few who just don't want a cab or ehydro.

Funny though I have cab tractors and four Ford trucks so I guess we are in agreement.

NO, I was not talking about Dave......

FYI, out 580 cost us about 14K about 7 years ago. I know it digs deeper than 8.5 foot as our neighbor borrowed it to finish digging his daughters basement when the excavator he was using broke. I know it sucked for him, but it worked. We use it to work on Field tile and to keep out ditches clean. Most of our fields have a tree row and a ditch around them on one side. We have to keep them clean to keep the tile working or irrigate going. I think a 485 would be too light for the job.

If we would have the conditions we have in the market now, I would own what Dave is talking about. A mini x would do more work and be more versatile, but they were more expensive back then. This is another engine to maintain, but our farm does not have many tractors, and what we do have is paid for, so a bit of maintenance is nothing and expected.

Everyone has needs and opinions, and it comes down to that.

Everytime I feel GUILTY working in my open-station tractor on one of those breezy, fall days with a crisp blue sky; I'll walk over and fire up the cabbed tractor to finish the job!

And when I'm plowing snow in my cabbed tractor and feeling "out-of-touch" with nature and the elements; I'll walk over to my open-station and finish the job!

'Course, I won't have to JUSTIFY it to anyone - 'cause I can be both comfortable or uncomfortable and appreciative of the natural elements and cocooned away with Sirrius - all during the same day!

As a person who "has a hoe" (technically its on my Dad's tractor, but hey, I can borrow the whole thing any time)...and as cash paying customers we both agree that with the current landscape of mini-ex pricing, it makes no financial sense for us to buy a Hoe. Back when he bought the hoe, they were 3500.00 new and a used mini-ex which was pratically non-existent went for 20k. So just like you, while I can honestly say I'd never buy a hoe, we just cant justify selling our Hoe to buy a Mini-Ex at this time. The hoe is mounted on his Kubota so its no major loss if he breaks the whole thing in half :laughing:

I don't have a cab or canopy on my tractor. I use my hat and spf 45 long-sleeve fishing shirts to protect me from the sun. I don't get sunburned, but boy do I get filthy. Are there times when I wish I had a cab? You better believe it. Not because of the sun, but it would've been nice on several occasions to be able to go somewhere and not have to get cleaned up first.
We have two properties right now. Live on one and planning to build on the other, which I'm cleaning up right now (the reason I bought the tractor) and is 45 minutes away.

Like others have stated, If I had a cab, I could definitely work longer days. I wouldn't have to cut my days short because I was going somewere. Snow is not an issue for me. It froze maybe two days (30 degrees) last Winter, and **** WAS I COLD.

Will I upgrade to a cab? No, I need my money for other things. Besides, my property isn't conducive to a cab at its current state. I do see the advantages of having one though.
