TBrad, you are correct. I meant PTO to engine, but had drawbar on my mind. Thanks for fixing my mistake before I confused the issue further. Keeps me humble....

Just wandering from all the comments on bushhog size and horsepower if an 1820D would be ok with a five foot bushhog?
thanks rccoyote

Borderline on running a 5' rotary with a 1820. Depends on how tall/thick stuff you are cutting and how fast you want to go. I prefer a 48" on an 1820, yet I have seen guys doing OK with a 60" on a 1610 in the right conditions.

I would love to do the rebuild on your PTO gearing when it explodes. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

I have an 1820-D here, the other day I hooked up a howse 5'
mower to it just to cut & blow the leaves off a building site next to my barn ,and it wasnt pretty!
It was just to clunky on the back getting around the trees I was ripping the bark off a few.
And on the side hill I gave up.
A 48" would be much nicer, and my wheels where on the wide setting too.
If I had perfectly flat ground ( no problem)
But it wont cut real tall grass.
stay with a 4'

I have a 1720D and have run a 5 foot bush hog behind it. While it has the power to run it it is not a good fit, the weight is transfered too far back and it swings out several inches by the time you get to the back of the bush hog. Overall a 4 foot will probably be easier and faster on anything but totally flat ground.

Ok, I have a 4' woods mower (older model) behind a 1500D. The woods mower is extremely heavy duty. It is mostly 1/4' plate steel. The thing is about 6' long withthe tail wheel. If I lift the hog up, it takes some weight off the front of the tractor to the point of making a U turn impossible. But the mower will flat cut the heck out of anything. I use it to cut trails through the woods for deer hunting and maintain the trails. Keep it slow and it will go.

I'm running a 5 ft on my 226d, which is about the same as a 1820, and it performs well. It's not too heavy either, my front end never comes off the ground, or even feels light.
