Why a clutch on a hydrostatic trans? I have an older BX with HST and no clutch, and a newly acquired B21 with HST with a clutch, whats the real purpose or usefulness behind the clutch on an HST, besides the obvious?

I believe the clutch is necessary to change gears. The BX only has one gear.

The B needs the clutch for the PTO also

Look and feel. When people by a "real" tractor, they want a clutch pedal. There are several smaller tractor models that really do not need a clutch on them.

I honestly don't know, but that is the only thing I don't like about my L5030 and the only thing I consistently use it for is to start.

I use the clutch to pick up the load on a PTO implement. The hydro clutch is pretty abrupt, and can put a lot of strain on the drive line and gears. I also use it as an emergency disconnect when I get into a situation I didn't anticipate. My HST pedal is perfectly centered, so I don't have to use a clutch to change gears, but not all HST pedals are that well adjusted.

The clutch also disconnects the wobble pump, and makes starting easier. The hydraulic pumps stay live, though.

My Kubota B7800 has a hydrostatic transmission but also has a clutch. This is needed to engage (or disengage) either the mid or rear pto.
