I have a "flag lot", my driveway is very long and skinny (500+ft x 20ft). I just installed field fence on the right side, and the driveway. I want to install an inexpensive 16' farm gate. This will leave me with approx. 2 feet on either side of the gate posts i'll need to fill with something. I know it's not much room, but id like to make the transition from gate post to field fence look really nice if possible. The wire stretched in front is temporary, and really looks like crap IMO. I have a temporary chain gate I installed today. There is also field fence on the left, it's just really old and difficult to see. How would you finish off this entrance, while using this gate? Thanks.

I was thinking maybe with PT timbers. set the gate posts and angle a few timbers inward to kind of funnel into gated area.

Stone pillars, automatic opener, alert sensor, and motion sensor lights. You can also make a metal fence out of steel square tubing and use it to support the farm fence gate.

Also, why use a farm gate? You can buy 8' aluminum gates that look stoic but sophisticated. By swinging one from each side, you can leave 1 closed all the time, 1 open all the time or both closed, with a final option to open them both if necessary. This works for me. (I can get you a picture if you would like to see). I use solar lights in the gate stiles for a little ambience.

BTW: A pickup or SUV goes thru an 8' gate space (with additional space of the hinge + latch gap) with about 2" to spare. This keeps the speeding down. This gives you the effect desired: "If you are looking for Trouble, You'll find it Here", or "Not Sure about Heaven or Hel*? Come on In and Find Out."

Are you in snow country or not? Where?

I think I would get some panels made to simulate the pipe and wire in the gate. To me that would dress it up the best, short of putting in an 18' gate. :)

This is what I was writing about. Outbound and inbound. The driveway alert is a Miltronics LR Deluxe infrared sensor. Good to over 1000'.

beenthere: im in florida. what kind of panels are you referring to? got a picture?

zzvyb6: thats a real nice gate you have. i like it alot. however i don't think it would mate well with my field fence and limerock drive, I think it would be too "dressy" and wouldnt match well (same with stone pillars). thats why i was thinking a wire mesh farm gate. My drive is 10' wide so no inbound/outbound, one way only. i think im looking for more of a ranch/rustic look.

You showed a pic of a gate. I presumed it was the one (or similar) to the one you are going to hang across your drive.
My suggestion was to "make/build/have built" side panels to fill the gaps that match that gate so they have a uniform look across the full width.
Very much like the pics that zzvyb6 shows (which are very neat), and it adds to the good looks when the sides are of the same design.

What is the gate intended to keep out, or in as the case may be?

If you are only really concerned about vehicles, just plant new posts with 16' between them. If the posts are 12" in diameter, you will only have a 12" gap on either side. A Pedestrian could squeeze through, but certainly not a vehicle.

If you want more security, plant two 12" posts on either side and tie them together with all-thread and nuts/washers. A determined pedestrian will still climb the gate, but even bicycles will be excluded.

While you are thinking about what to do I'd hang something easily visible like a rag from that chain or it might decapitate someone. It nearly happened to me once.

If the gate and fence posts you have in now are wood, I'd keep it simple and use similar sections of wood post run horizontally between the gate posts and the fence posts. I also add a Diangonal wire turnbuckle running from the top of the gate post to the bottom of the fence post on the hinge side of the gate post (support the weight of the gate)

We usually run that type of cable through a stick of 2 or 3" white PVC pipe for visibility.

We use welded wire panels for short places in our fences , you can just staple them to the posts like the field fence , just cut them down to fit ( bolt cutters ) Not sure what lenth they come in .

That is good advise, when my son was in high school there was a boy in a nearby community and his name was the same as my son and he was ridding a 4 wheeler and he had went up a road and while he was up there the people that owned the place stretched a wire rope across the road as they normally had done when there was no one on site. Any way when the boy was coming out he ran into the wire and it hung him, he died at the scene.

A lot of my friends thought it was my son and they called to check on us to see if we was alright[ as if you could be at a time like that]. My son was with me when the calls started coming in, even though I knew he was alright it still had a heart wrenching feeling when I would get the calls. If they would have had some kind of marker on that cable something that simple might have saved that boys life. The news that that boy's family got is something I hope I never get.

Alot of people use the poly gas or fiber optic tube for under ground
it's orange or yellow over the cable they you can drive over it and it dosen't brake.

Here's my solution. Similar problem, different dimensions. This is kinda like other guys have suggested. I built a panel that sort of replicated the gates I chose. And I stretched woven wire fabric onto it, from the same roll as the fence that is right there next to it. SOMEDAY the panels, the gates, and the steel posts that they hang from will all be the same dark hunter green color. It's been a battle this year.

Wow, great curb appeal. Does the wife use it to keep people out or you in? :)

That looks really nice too, blends in beautifully.

Why don't you get a couple of large cedar trees and plant one on either side. The branches can grow through either fence and you can trim the "inner branches" back to the trunk. This could be similar to natural columns to "visually anchor" the entryway. Another appealing plant is the Crepe Myrtle tree, which is easily pruned and trainable.

Winner!

a small masonry wall? Put stone on it (dry stacked, river rock, cultured, natural, etc.) Add a light on top of either one?
