Has Mahindra Passed Deere in sales?

The early Mahindra's were basically IH tractors and were very simple. Not finished real well and with few creature comforts, but reliable. A lot has changed in the last 20 years. We still have a simple no frills model line, but the majority of our sales are the utility or premium models, not the economy models, at least in the west.

Thanks for the Mahindra update. What they have done is impressive. If I ever get in the market again I will check them out. I expect the 1976 265 MF with 1200 hours and the well worn 1983 JD 310B backhoe will wear me out before I wear them out. :D

When you are 60 with your tractor "needs" met and they do not earn you any money then it is time to enjoy them as long as you can.

What's your point? Practices have changed since then?

what was your point?
in 2007 the CEO of Deere stated that Mahindra would most likely surpass them (deere) in global tractor sales...now in 2010 they have...(the topic of the OP)

considering the fact they have come so far (since 2003) one would assume they have more than 40 employees in the US (your point?)

First, it was 40 employees in Georgia not the US. I have no idea how many they have in the US.

As far as sales, who cares, now we're back to one million hamburgers from a fast food chain.

And lastly I don't "assume" anything, as far as how goods the tractors are, I don't know and I would have to see them close up and use them for an extended time to determine that. Why should I do that? I have a great tractor, proven design AND great resale. In the end whose spending more? Anyone here looking for a used Mahindra?

So if you love your Mahindra, great. Whether it is number one or not in sales is a useless, valueless ad ploy in a vailed attempt to compare Mahindra to Deere. Again, you may notice Deere doesn't need to do that.

It's the story of the guy with the Porsche and the guy with the Fiat. The guy with the Porsche doesn't have to drive fast, everyone knows he's got a fast car. The guy in the Fiat constantly drives fast, he has something to prove.

So what's happening here? Everyone knows Deere and Kubota make good tractors, Mahindra, we have our doubts but keep driving fast and maybe you'll get noticed.

NO?
FYI wiseguy...I don't now and never have owned a Mahindra and if you have followed this thread you would realize that...along with the fact that the topic of this thread is nothing BUT about Mahindra being the global leader in tractor sales...not Deere, Kubota or any other brand...Mahindra...

live with it...!

Someone makes a statement to elicit a response or to establish a premise. We can't simply say so and so is number one without asking what they want to establish. They are attempting to relay a message and I am responding to that statement and what it means. Isn't that the crux of it? What Mahindra is attempting to establish with their advertising?

It's not about living with anything, I don't care who is number one, I don't buy things based on popularity.... It's foolish.

I don't know who sells the most tractors - agriculture, commercial/ construction, skid steer or all together, but the last time that I saw numbers that I trust - the clear leader was John Deere. So, until I see evidence to the contrary, it's still John Deere. They may, and I suspect that at some point will, be surpassed by someone. I personally don't see the relevance of who is the # 1 seller other bragging rights. It did in no way impact my decision to go with John Deere when I purchased my 4320 in 2006. Service and parts availability along with 100 years of reputation did influence me, besides that I like a certain shade of green paint.

Of course, the answer to the op's question is - I don't know, but sure did make for an interesting discussion.

I think we all can agree if China and India go on to be the top two financial leaders in the world that we will see more of their tractors and not less. :D

UK is talking about the desire for Africa to be the happening place of the century as far as development goes. Should Africa just double their consumption it would be a boom for basic hard working long lasting tractor sales.

I am not sure JD, others are even positioned with a low end work horse of a tractor like Mahindra has. Not sure they would paint a line green for JD to resale either.

Remember when Oliver then MF were world leaders in tractors sales? Things NEVER stay the same for EVER. :D

Yes, I buy all of them I can. If they are on the west coast and at a fair price, I'm a cash buyer. So if you find a bunch of them cheap because nobody wants them, let me know right away. :D

Interesting discussion. Many good points being made, let's just keep it friendly.

I was working for about three months in India last year. Since the job was a pipeline I was located in rural area. There are several tractor manufacturers in India but Mahindra is without a question the most popular. Tata is distant second. There was also JD dealership in the town but I saw only few JD on the road.
The popularity of Mahindra is probably well deserved seeing the punishment the Indian farmers bestow on the tractors.
Mahindra used to support US war effort during WW2 making famous Jeeps under US license. I think they still make them even today mostly for police and army.
Mahindra & Mahindra is one of the largest Indian companies today. That means strong R&D muscle and enough money to stay in the market and build good reputation. There is precedent for success by delivering quality.
My wife told me that when Toyota entered US market they used to sell quite ugly low tech cars door to door. If you looked at the car they gave you a baseball cap. If you drove the car around the block they gave you a t-shirt. Guys in Detroit used to laugh at it. Well they are not laughing anymore.
