I wouldn't do it. They make a huge difference in mosquitos. Maybe block them from entering the barn and they will relocate?

If you have a barn, you will have bats. That’s part of living outside of the city. It would be foolish (and illegal) to kill them, and unless you seal the barn up tight, they will always return. They aren’t trying to “run you out”. I would suggest getting use to them.

JD,

I can imagine that bats as a pest would be undesirable, with the very real chance they can carry rabies. Since they are beneficial otherwise, maybe putting up some bat houses around and outside the barn would give them a more desirable place to live without the two of you having to cross paths

build some bat boxes out side that are more comfortable than your barn

tom

Yes, this is the winning answer. Bats are very good for things. Ugly, but good. If there's tons of droppings in the barn that's not so good though.

Find where they enter if there is a main spot and you can even build a house that uses the same entrance to fool them.

it,s nearly impossible to rid a barn of bats,so just enjoy the fact they,re there and the insect control is free. There is so much miss information about bats so get yourself informed on them.I,d like to have more than I have now.Yes they can carry rabies but so do many other critters.Around here raccons and skunks come to mind.I,v never personally heard of a person being bitten by a rabid bat but I,m sure it has happened, but living in the country has far fewer fit falls than city life, never yet heard of a bat mugging an old person for their so. sec check:DDave

How do they try to "run you out" ?

They usually don't defend their territory. They sleep during the day and fly about at night.

Curious here. But I agree with the other posts, that they can't be gotten rid of short of sealing up the barn.

I agree, I have a bat that lives in a crevice just above the outside door to my office and wish he/she would get married!

.22 caliber bird shot works. It's powerful enough to kill the bats but it wont put a hole in the roof. However, bird shot ruins the barrel's rifling so use an inexpensive gun.

I have a bat problem with bats in my pole barn. They defecate on my vehicles and ruin the paint and chrome. There must be some acid in their stool. I know they can carry rabies, as well. Not a desirable creature to have in your buildings. I have tried running them out with a long cane pole but they come right back. I guess a pellet gun might be a good solution. I would not miss their supposed mosquito eating abilities because I still have lots of them! I have heard that playing some loud hip-hop would scare them off. I know it would do it for me! I have tried bat houses but they like my pole barn much better. They are a problem and I believe the pellet gun might be the best answer.

A fan set to "stir the air" and create a bit of "white noise" has rid the neighbor's attic of bats. A $20 bill at wally world. Worth a try.

Does it disturb their sleep when the air wobbles them? :D

Who knows? Bats are "different". Flying mice here in North America, In Australia, they have flying Wood Chucks! ;-)

Be thankful for the little things.

<snert> Yeah, the flying fox is a very big bat, but it eats fruit. We've got the micro-bats here too and they're very welcome, although their guano is extremely acidic.

Fortunately, there is no rabies in all of Australia.

I think you better face facts. You live in the country, you have a barn - you are going to have bats. The only solution - move back to the city. You can get rid of the barn but the bats will simply find other areas to roost on your property.

I've tried "bat houses" but they like their current digs a lot better than the bat houses.
