If you manual does not mention it, you don't have a screen. This isn't something a manual would likely overlook or "miss".

I would pull the screen/strainer and let at least a quart or so run out. That would seem to allow particles that were near the screen but not on the screen to be flushed out. I am not certain but it seems that some particles could find their way to the clean side of the screen if you didn't allow for a little flushing. Could be completely wrong but that is the way I would do it.

When I did my 50 hour service I followed the online guide and pulled the drain plugs first. By the time I removed the screen very little fluid came out when the screen was removed. There were very little debris on my screen. Next time I do the service I am going to work from the top down and pull the screen first, and pick up a couple spare O rings, have to admit I didn't see the inner one. Luckily the liberal application of Kubota Orange held the oring in place.

Dave, Well a pint, or there about, is going to come out no matter how fast or how dexterous you are with your plug, so there will be some back washing. The screen, as I understand it, is a protection for the pickup on the other side of the screen. Thus, anything on the far side of the screen is GONE and moved on through your system.

Many guys report the shavings, whatever there are, will be found settling down toward your main drain plug and get eliminated when your do the full fluid drop at the scheduled intervals. So far, I have not noticed my screen even having any shavings. I wish Kubota used a magnetic plug like Honda does.

The procedure described above is not intended to replace your scheduled services, but merely to be a supplement, during the in between times, as needed or desired.

I tend to worry not just about what the screen should catch, but tiny pieces that the filter should catch. It would be interesting to know if there are metal particles that none of the filter measures will catch, and whether particles that small are even harmful.

An interesting potential improvement to the cork method may be to insert a rod shaped magnet so that it protrudes from the end of the cork into that housing in an attempt / experiment to gather any loose metal particles hanging out near the screen.

Also, I wonder if a strong magnet band stuck to the filter cartridge has merit.

Has anyone ever used one of the external magnet devices and proved they work.

North Carolina government may have provided me with an opportunity to cut open all my oil filters in the future. They have banned them from landfills, without advertising any alternative disposal places, so now I do not have a clue what to do with my filters other that cut them open, remove the media, mash out the oil, and burn the media, recycle the metal into the metal dumpster.

One trick I tried and it worked well was to use a vacuum cleaner to stop fluid loss when removing a plug or screen below fluid level.
Huh?
I had a leaking oil drain plug once on my truck. Simply have someone hold a vacuum cleaner hose on the oil fill while you remove the plug or screen. This sucks air into the opening of whatever you removed preventing fluid from going out. Let me apply a new gasket to the oil plug without any of the 14 quarts running out:thumbsup:
I would use a shop vac...the wifey might not appreciate it if some oil mist found its way into her high dollar home vacuum......

my dealer said when they do the 50 hour service the oil inevitably comes out looking brand new - You can't tell it from the new stuff. He suggested I wait until 100 hours. What do you guys think??
