Brush hog gearbox...oil or grease?

As far as the seal goes they are not that hard to replace. It was replaced but the score on the shaft destroyed in in no time. I could not find parts for this old PHD at the time. Had a job to finnish so attempted to fill with grease and then the PHD blew up. Burried it and went and bought another from Agri-Supply.

I'm betting the Bush Hog crew will be aghast at the idea of non-liquid grease in their gear boxes (they are VERY responsive to email, write them). I'd 2nd the notion of using it only as a last resort where you had an old unit with bad seals that could be be repaired(?).

The point about cooling also sounds very important to me. If you look at where grease nipples are on machinery, you'll note that it is generally where the area is confined and heat is not as much of an issue, etc.

some were made for heavy weight oil, some for grease.......
can you share more information on the mfg, pictures, the box that surrounds the gearbox?
most were made for grease.

All I know is we have a bush hog that is over 80 years old. The seals I know have been gone for a good 40 years, axle grease has been working fine in it. This old hog still running strong.

Eighty years? Bush Hog (the company) patented the first bush hog (the mower) and went into production in the early 1950's. (I owned one of those first models) They're the oldest and just recently hit the 50 year mark.

I just checked the oil in my Bush Hog gear box and was surprised to find that it is a milky white, and not much thicker than whole milk. I was expecting black oil color. Is it contaminated? Water logged? Should it look like oil or milk?

If it needs to come out entirely, how do I drain the gear box? Only seems to have a check plug hole and filler hole, not a drain hole.

It is a Bush Hog Squealer 720, eight years old.

Id say you have water. I think i would either try and turn it over with a boom pole or loader, or take off the plate and drain it and wash with deisel and put the plate back on (with gasket maker) and then refill.

I have a woods HD315 15' cutter with a wing gearbox that eats seals as quick as you put them in. It needs the gearbox/shaft rebuilt, but this cutter is so wore out it's not worth spending the money on. I filled the gearbox with grease nearly full to the top and have been going for two years with it like that and not a problem one with it. When this thing finally gives out or rusts in half I am just going to scarp it, but if I had a nice cutter I think I'd fix it the proper way.

Drill and tap that junk gearbox for a grease zerk, then you can give it a few pumps each time you service the rest and keep it full of grease.

dump in some atf oil, and rubbing alcohol.. agitate to mix, then drain or syphon out.. refill with gear oil to proper level
