Late to come back to the party
Seriously, take the brand & color out of this conversation and we could easily be talking about HP/Sony/Ford/DeWalt/Bostitch, the list goes on across all products.
I think what would make everybody happy is for Deere to make a BULLETPROOF Professional grade machine to sell at Home Depot & Lowes for $1,299.00
The Common Law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot...it can't be done.
They didnt sell out IMO...no more then DeWalt...what JD did was see a market and design/build/sell a machine suited for that market. I bet they started out with a "price point" and worked backwards from there. I think they did the right thing because I sure see alot of those machines in my travels...
I was at a close by (not my local) dealer a few years ago and they had a nice 4x8 sheet of plywood done up as a display using the parts from the JD "Big Box" version and the next step up....clearly illustrating to everyone what the differences were. They had both versions on the lot...I dont kid myself, IMO the only difference between the various $1k riding mowers is the paint job and plant of MFG.
