The other day I was moving some dirt and went to put the tractor in reverse, Well the stick shift just went limp like I broke something inside. Now the tractor is stuck in first gear and the stick shifter is all limp. Anyone out there have this happen? And if so what was the fix? I have not taken the plate off to look yet as the tractor is on a steep incline and stuck there because of being stuck in gear. Oh yeah the tractor is a farmpro 25 hp year is 2003.

So is this a pretty easy fix? It looks like there are six bolts holding down that plate.

As tommy mentioned, you can remove the top cover(with the engine shut off) and use a screwdriver/small prybar to shift the gears manually and replace the cover then startup the engine to get the beast to a better place to work on. There should be a little lock ball between the shift rods where they opass thru the front or rear wall of the gearbox, that prevents the forks from engaging more than one slider gear at a time. Poppig the top will also show you what is broken, and also allow you to remove any loose bits befor they do gear damage.

Not in these chinese gearboxes, but in manual gearboxes, I have also seen the bottom post of the shifter break off. I have seen the little "C" box that the end of the shifter slips sideways into while in neutral to move a slider between say 1st and Rev, break. I have also seen shift forks break where pinned to the slider shaft (4wheelin is hard on gear:). Once you pop the top, how it works will become evident. They are simple to work on, and if it is just the end of the lever, that is a piece of cake. If it is down in the gearbox, say a shift fork or the little "C" box that the shift lever engages, sadly the tractor may have to be split to allow the particular shift rod those parts are attached to, to be withdrawn to unpin and remove/replace the broken part...

I've had the shift dog break. As others noted, the top of the gearbox comes off easily and it was simple to fix in place. Take the top off and take a look.

Should there be an o-clip or a c-clip that hold the spring in place? When I took it apart the bottom of the shifter was broken right below the ball.

The clip that holds the spring in place looks like a c-clip ..... Is this right? Or should this be a full circle?

Should I try to get the Tractor shifted in neutral before I put everything back together?

"C" clip is correct, you should be able to work/pop it out with a screwdriver and some needle nose pliars. There should be a dome or washer under the c clip, with a spring under that? You may need to put a little pressure down on this to compress the spring a little which will free up the c clip in it's groove to allow you to remove and re-install the c clip.

You don't have to shift it back into neutral to re-install the top cover and new lever. You do need to make sure the new shifter end goes into the proper position to engage the proper shift dog. IE: the shift lever is in the position for the gear that the tractor is currently stuck in.

Glad it was something simple.

Ok, so I put everything back together and the c clip keeps comming out of place.. Does the c clip have to face a certain way? I am having a problem getting everything to line up right. Can anyone tell by the picture if this is in first gear or 3rd? I think it was first gear that I was in but I may have been changing from 3rd to first when it broke.

Is the clip loose? Did it get bent out of shape or sprung? Is the grove it fits in on the shifter ate up? I would start by taking a trip to the local hardware store and getting a new clip, and maybe one the next size smaller and giving them a try first.

Well looking at that pic, that transmission is either in reverse or third gear. IE: if the stick was pushed to the right and rear(reverse), that would cause the short end of the shift lever to engage the left shift rod and push it forward. Conversely if the stick was pushed to the left and forward(3rdgear), that would cause the short end of the shift lever to engage the right side rod and push it to the rear. If it was in neutral, the two dogs would be side by side. If you were in 3rd, you should be able to push in the clutch and push forward on the right rod and get back into neutral(dogs side by side).

Could be the clip deformed a little bit when removed. You could try bending/expanding it and see if it stays put, but i agree with Chris, try finding a replacement at the hardware store. It will probably have better spring characteristics than the original...
