Hello- I have been a long time lurker and I finally decided to post up. A lot of knowledge in here far more than I on this topic. I recently bought a home on 7.5 acres. The previous owner "attempted" to clear out some trees but left piles of tree trunks and just mess throughout the property. I would like some advice on what type and size tractor I will need to clean the area up and to keep it maintained. I videoed the land to give you an idea of what I have a head of me. The driveway is half a mile long from the road to the home. Anyway please fire away and suggestions for a tractor and implements as this will be my first tractor.

I found out that tree trunks do not burn. I threw one in my fire pit and after a steel melting three day fire, the trunk was still there. I'm glad I have a backhoe, now I dig a pit and bury them.

I maintain 20 acres, 700 foot of gravel driveway, drainage ditches and most other items rual living brings. See my signature for my equipment. Two notes, I would like to get a jake rake and if I were to do it over again, I would have gone with the B2630, 4 less HP but I only run < 2K RPM, don't know what HP level that is but I do not use anything near the 30 HP.

Backhoe to remove the tree trunks. But if you don't have any other uses for a backhoe, hire that work done and save a bunch of $$.

What's your plan for the cleared land? Pasture? Food plot? Hay field? Row crops? Answer this question and you'll be able to figure out which implements you need.

Tractor: New or used?

I'd look for 30-40 hp (pto) diesel, 4WD, hydrostatic tranny, FEL with 5-ft wide bucket (with chain hooks and, highly recommended, skid steer quick attach adapter), dual hydraulic remotes on the rear.

Ditto on Flusher's response...what do you want to do on the land other than clear trees?

I would go atleast 40 pto hp with SS QA so you can run a 5-6' bucket and maybe even a root grapple. something similar to the one in the pictures. That is a TC40 NewHolland. The backhoe and thumb would be excellent for picking up logs as would the root grapple. Also, check out the John Deere 4x20 series tractors and maybe even the 5000 series. And dont forget the L and M series kubotas. All great machines and they will get the job done.

I am pretty much in agreement with JohnDeere3720 as to the size tractor give or take a few HP depending on the tractor. I would rent a machine for any jobs that size machine won't handle and won't be long in duration or ongoing.

Look at all makes to find one that fits you as all brands make good tractors.

Notice the picture of the many toothed grapple monster. Don't leave the dealership without one! If you have a bunch of teenagers at home giving you the rolling eyeball routine... one hour on a tractor with a grapple and you'll be all smiles again.:D I think it must have been designed for Iron Man.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'm seriously considering hiring out the initial cleanup and then using something to maintain the property.

I have a Kubota L-3400 and 6ac. I initially agonized about the cost of a subframe BH but now that I have it, I keep coming up with uses for it.
I will admit that grubbing large stumps is a time intensive process but I usually catch myself smiling while I'm doing it.
A FEL with Quick attach is a must as well as a grapple. My land is mostly woods and something is always falling out of the trees or trees are in need of cutting and clearing. The Grapple is a lifesaver and a time saver. Finally a quality brushcutter is handy. I have cut several trails thru the woods to walk or ride on. I have dug a small pond and set up the wife's garden complete with irrigation, all with the help of this tractor. Once you get a tractor new uses will continually present themselves. Have Fun!
