from what i have read (and i am not expert) they changed the over running clutch design so that the newer models don't make the same noise anymore. The one I am looking at is either a 2005 model or early 2006 model.

This is correct. The newer L3400, L2800 and L3700 will not make any noise. The beveled cam which provided the ORC function has been replaced with a non beveled cam. Here is a pic of the new cam.

I had jerky loader and 3pt hitch on my 2006 L2800 that was solved when I replaced the rubber hydraulic suction line to hydraulic pump when it had hairline cracks in it ( seems to be a design problem). This happened at about 50 hrs and 320 hrs. Also check hydraulic knob below seat between ankles for jerkiness. Also had a hydraulic sightglass leaking problem.

ccsial,
thanks for your comments in other threads about this issue, they helped me make up my mind to buy the tractor from my friend. I drove it again today (3rd time) and if i slowly lower the throttle I dont get any over running. Then I just disengage the pto. Seems to work great!

I tried turning the hydraulic knob below the seat but couldn't get it to budge in either direction. Any advice other than "grow some muscle". Is there a trick to turning this knob?

I have the same problem with the know under the seat. Won't budge without breaking it. I've tried lubricating it and nothing helps.

anybody know how to adjust this?

Mine was loose originally and set it where I wanted for phd/splitter then I recently put a cement mixer on and wanted to change the adjustment. It was way stiff but moveable. I put some lps on it and it adjusts fine now. You might try a vicegrip on the shaft so you dont break the handle off.

Large pliers... Once it's broken free... it's easier.

ORC... push in the clutch at the same time you move the PTO lever...
