How Do You Get To 8F/4R.??

My 30 year old JD2240 has the same setup. 8F & 4R and you're right about the reverse speed being different. It's not the same as either High or Low, but rather somewhere in between. I usually operate somewhere between L1 and L3 depending on what I'm doing and reverse is quite a bit faster.

Yep. Your 2240 is probabally the same as the 2040. Both shifters are the center "hump" right beside eachother. The H-L-R lever actually as 4 positions like the 1-4 shifter. The 4th (left and up) is a park.

But the same concept none the less. 8F and 4R. But most of the newer tractors have the H-L-R selector in a more "convenient" location to the left of the seat at your side.

My 870 has 9F 3R and same issue reverse is always faster that forward. Perhaps they are assuming you're backing over your own tracks so there won't be any obstacle issues and you can set back up quickly to go forward for what ever you're doing??

My only complaint on the L2800 and L3400 tranny and speeds is that Low forward and Reverse aren't the same gear ratios. Meaning that R4 is FASTER than L4, R3 is faster than L3, etc. So when mowing or doing bucket work, where shifting the shuttle shifter from Low to Reverse quite frequently, it is a PITA going faster in reverse at times.

That's the way most tractors are set up. In their mind the primary function when shuttling from L to R is for loader work, so having a slightly higher reverse speed is ok (makes for a quicker cycle). Where it is not ok is like on the JD I previously mentioned. I'll be round baling along in L4 and need to reverse to dump the bale, and at PTO speed R4 is ridiculously high for this. So then you have to shift the other stick into a lower gear also.

I have the same complaint. I find the worst is when mowing. I usually mow in either 4 low or 1 high. Reverse is either too fast or painfully slow in either 4 or 1.

Exacally my problem as well.

I usually mow in 4L because my yard is smaller, and I usually wait too long before finally mowing:D. 4R is jsut too much faster than 4L to give a good cut.

The few times I get on the ball and can mow in 1H or 2H, given the smaller yard and a lot of reverse, I fine it too much of a pain going from 1H to 4R, and I usually just mow in 4L anyway.

FWIW, my L2850 has 8 F and 7 reverse. It has 4 gears with high/low selector. The 4h reverse is block out. DT8 tranny I believe.

Don't let those HST guys see this post... There is an awful lot of ammunition in here for the next HST vs. gear argument. :) Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

Our 2550 has that, but a little slop that has developed in the linkage lets it go into H4R.
